Story Overview:
All’s fair in love and work. The first standalone romance by New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (Beautiful Bastard) is a sexy, compulsively readable romantic comedy that dives headlong into the thrill and doubt of modern love.

Despite the odds against them from an embarrassing meet-awkward at a mutual friend’s Halloween party, Carter and Evie immediately hit it off. Even the realization that they’re both high-powered agents at competing firms in Hollywood isn’t enough to squash the fire.

But when their two agencies merge—causing the pair to vie for the same position—all bets are off. What could have been a beautiful, blossoming romance turns into an all-out war of sabotage. Carter and Evie are both thirtysomething professionals—so why can’t they act like it?

Can Carter stop trying to please everyone and see how their mutual boss is really playing the game? Can Evie put aside her competitive nature long enough to figure out what she really wants in life? Can their actor clients just be something close to human? Whether these two Hollywood love/hatebirds get the storybook Hollywood ending or just a dramedy of epic proportions, you will get to enjoy Christina Lauren’s heartfelt, raucous, and hilarious romance style at its finest.

My Review:

After reading romance novels for so long, you begin to recognize certain tried and true pathways that authors use to tell their story. I have no issue with that because the authors can get creative in so many other ways, but this book is different. This book veers completely off that path and I'm so excited about that creativity.

This book starts with a Halloween party where Evie and Carter are the only single people there. It's a set up by their mutual friends. Despite everything, including neither having time for a relationship, they really hit it off. Instant chemistry. Instant attraction. Instant knowledge that they really, really like the other person. This is good. They may not have planned on a relationship and wow, it's going to be tough because they both work crazy hours, but they are perfect for one another, so all that can be overcome.

Then life changes and suddenly they're working for the same company. Tensions grow. Decisions are made. And suddenly they don't really like one another anymore. They really kind of hate each other.

It is such a twist on the normal enemy to lovers story, because this is totally an lovers to enemies story. And wow, it's so well-done. Because the authors draw the reader in. You're in this relationship with Evie and Carter. You like them. You're cheering for them. And then it all starts to go to hell. And that's heartbreaking...for you, the reader, and for them, the characters.

This is a book full of highs and lows and it will most definitely take you on an emotional roller-coaster. Like all Christina Lauren books, there are moments which are laugh out loud funny and times when you can't believe what you just read, but I was amazed at how well they took us to the other end of the spectrum in this one. There were moments when I just wanted to cry for Evie and Carter. They liked each other so, so much...and then everything just blew up.

I loved this book, and I think you will, too. I HIGHLY recommend it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
