Story Overview:
One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With The Mane Event, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast...

Christmas Pride
How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes--as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her...and makes her want more. Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her--in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel...

Shaw's Tail
Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go. Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl--even one who runs with a Pack--can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

My Review:
There are actually 2 full books which are separate stories in this book. I have reviewed them below as separate books.

Christmas Pride: A+
This was the first Shelly Laurenston I have ever read, but it absolutely will not be my last. OMG, I loved this book!!! Shelly is an amazing writer. This book was so funny and witty without being obviously so. It's so naturally done. I really, really loved it.

This series is the Pride series, featuring the Lion Pride. This first book features Mace Llewellyn, a lion shifter, ex-SEAL, and all-around sexy guy. He was definitely one of those characters that you wish that you could meet. At his heart, he's a cat. He's fairly laid-back and nonchalant about things, but when he gets riled, Watch out! He is the king of the Beasts. He's a wonderful shifter character.

The heroine is Desiree, Dez. She is an NYPD investigator and is investigating a murder within the Pride. As a former Marine, she is tough in her own right. She raises and trains police dogs...yes, she's a dog person, not a cat person. She has tons of guy friends, but hasn't really dated anyone since her divorce. It's simply not worth the time. She and Mace were friends, really good friends in high school, but they lost touch when her family moved to another part of NYC. Mace has always loved her and since he just got out of the military, has a PI looking for her. Luckily, he didn't have to look far when he finds her at the Pride house his first night home. Oh, and yes, Dez is human with no idea about Shifters.

There are so many things to love about this book:
*Dez's dogs- she has two police-trained rottweilers. Anytime Mace is in the house, they hide under the bed. One of the absolute funniest scenes in the book is when Dez asks Mace to go walk the dogs and pick up after them...OMG, I was rolling!

*the whole Shifter community- normally the different types of animal shifters don't mix, but Mace has been serving with a Shifter group in the SEALS so he is used to working with other animals. His best friend and soon-to-be business partner is a wolf...part of a Pack that considers Mace to be one of their own even though he is a lion.

*all of Mace's animal characteristics are incredible. He sniffs Dez constantly and purrs when she rubs her fingers through his hair. He roars when he comes and can show his fangs and claws at will. Those elements tend to come out at really funny times throughout the book.

*OMG, the sex is HOT in this book...and there is a TON of it. Dez & Mace are VERY passionate, so be ready!

*I really loved that neither Mace nor Dez get along with his sister. There were some hilarious scenes with them simply giving her a really hard time.

Shaw's Tail: A-
I didn't like this book quite as much as the first book, simply because I couldn't relate to the heroine, Ronnie, as well as I did the heroine in the first book. But this book had just as much humor and charm as the first one and I definitely still really enjoyed it.

Ronnie is a southern gal who has just transferred to NYC. All the members in this pack seem to have a Lee after their name. Ronnie Lee, Bobby Lee, Sissy Lee...and they all have the southern attitudes to match their names which grated on me after a bit. Ronnie is a wolf and she has just turned 30 and decided that it's time to grow up and change her wild ways. Unfortunately, hooking up with a sexy lion shifter falls under the heading of those wild ways so she is trying to resist the draw to Brendan.

Brendan was attacked by a group of hyenas at the end of the first book. He almost died, but the wolf pack saved him. This all occurred on Christmas Eve and Ronnie was left to stay with him throughout the holiday. He finds an immediate connection to her. I loved Brendan. He's a lion shifter and king of the jungle so he likes to throw his weight around as an alpha. He is also a sneaky cat and is not above subterfuge to get Ronnie to do what he wants. Such a fun aspect to the story...when he would manipulate things to get his way...very tricky!

Just like the first book, this book was chock-full of humor!! I love much fun to read. And it is so well written into these books...just brilliant writing. I am seriously a new Shelly Laurenston fan!! You are going to be seeing a TON of her books on my future TBR's. That's a promise!!

Great review Christi. They both sound good and for getting ratings of A+ and A- they have to be great. :-D I'll have to check this out way later, but hopefully I'll get around to them.
