Story Overview:
New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak welcomes you to Silver Springs, a picturesque small town in Southern California where even the hardest hearts can learn to love again

Struggling to make ends meet after a messy divorce, Sadie Harris is at the end of her tether. Her waitressing gig isn't enough to pay the bills let alone secure primary custody of her son, Jayden, a battle she refuses to lose. Desperate, she accepts a position assisting Dawson Reed the same Dawson Reed who recently stood trial for the murder of his adoptive parents. Joining him at his isolated farm seems risky, but Sadie is out of options.

Dawson has given small town Silver Springs plenty of reasons to be wary, but he's innocent of the charges against him. He wants to leave his painful past behind and fix up the family farm so he can finally bring his dependent sister home where she belongs.

As Sadie and Dawson's professional relationship grows into something undeniably personal, Sadie realizes there's more to Dawson than the bad boy everyone else see she has a good heart, one that might even be worth fighting for.

My Review:
I missed reading the first book in this series, so all I knew going into this book was that I traditionally like Brenda Novak's style of writing. This book has an interesting premise and two main characters who are in a really bad place in life.

Dawson was just released from prison after being acquitted of murdering his adoptive parents in a horribly brutal way, but no one in this small town believes in his innocence. But he's back home on the family farm, trying to rebuild his life especially so that he can bring his adoptive sister, who is mentally handicapped, home from the state institution.

Sadie is in the process of trying to gain her independence from her ex-husband, who is also a cop in this small town. He's a bully and she's worried that he's about to become abusive because his actions are escalating. She has to make more money, so she answers Dawson's ad for a companion for his sister. Sadie is naturally leery of what she's walking into at Dawson's house, especially as everyone is warning her not to do this, but she doesn't have a choice.

This is a hard book to read just because both Sadie and Dawson are stuck...no one is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sadie's ex is a cop...he's above the law and no matter what happens, Dawson is seen as the bad guy...he killed his parents. This small town has tried and convicted him, no matter what the courts have said. Then there is the chemistry between them. There is no way that the two of them becoming romantically involved is a good idea. Things are already so complicated just by Sadie working for him.

With every turn of the page, the dread builds, because the reader can see the bad turn that is on the horizon. But it's like watching a car wreck, you can't look away. It's just made even harder because as the reader you care about these fictional people.

I really enjoyed the book. And I really like the premise of the series. I don't think the books are closely tied at all. Their tie is that one of the characters in each book lived at the Silver Springs boys ranch. And of course the books are written by Brenda Novak, so the story telling is incredible. I can't wait to read more in the series.

(And note...these covers have a very 'women's fiction' vibe to them. I'm not a big women's fiction fan...at all, so I was a bit worried going into this book. No worries...if you enjoy Brenda Novak, you will like this book. I'd consider it her traditional contemporary romance style.)

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
