Cole, what’s wrong?

Former detective Gavin DeGrassi likes his new life and his job as a university professor, molding the minds of the next generation of law enforcement. It keeps him in the field he loves, but out of the media and out of the danger he seems to draw. He’s settled and happy with his partner and Dom, Ben Haverson.

It’s Myah.

Until a middle of the night phone call from his brother, Cole, whose desperation and fear yank him back into the world of criminals and countdowns. Only this time, the stakes are much higher.

She’s missing.

Detective Myah Hayes, Gavin’s sister-in-law and former partner, has a past of her own, one that has returned to claim her. With only their instincts and the help of a rogue CSI, Gavin, Ben, and Cole will do whatever it takes to find Myah, following a flimsy trail of evidence to Chicago, where all is not what it seems—dirty cops, moral pimps, and a nest of snakes who call themselves businessmen.

They’re on a collision course with the worst of humanity, and more than Myah’s life is caught in the vortex. Can they find her, and if they do, will there be anything left to save?

My Review:
Wow, this book took this series into a very different, but equally dark, road. In this book, Myah, Gavin's sister in law and his ex-partner on the police force has been kidnapped. Then the race is on to find her.

The book is incredibly dark...all the way through. There is rape, torture, and forced drug-dependency. It's graphic, it's brutal, and I couldn't stop reading it. What Myah goes through is heartbreaking, and watching her break over and over again is too. Although those scenes with her were brutal, I think that added so much to this book. She's so strong!

But the book also shows the other side, the men who love her desperately trying to find her. Tempers get short, they feel powerless, and the whole situation is incredibly tough for everyone...Cole, her husband, Gavin, her bff, and Ben, the stoic guy trying to keep them all on track, but who's also losing his mind with worry and stress. Everyone in this book is pushed to the limits. But that makes this book an incredibly powerful read.

It's also a book that pushes the limits in other ways. A new character is introduced who should be a bad guy...but I kind of fell for him...a lot. I love it when an author can turn expectations on their side like that. I hope that we see him again...maybe in a few years with a pairing that was hinted about at the end? I could go for that.

Overall, if you can handle really dark subject matter, I highly recommend this one. I stayed up entirely too late because I couldn't put it down.
