A++...in the 6 year history of this blog, there have only been 17 books given that rating...that's over 2500 books. So yeah...long story short...you need to read this book. It was amazing!!
The way this book is written is riveting. Mia and Nick met just a few months after his parent suddenly died leaving him in charge of his brothers...Luke, 17, Zack and Dallas 14 yo twins, and 2 yo Hannah. Nick was only 18 or 19 and completely overwhelmed. There was no way he had time for a girl, other than his 2 yo sister who counted on him for everything. But despite that he and Mia made it work.
The bulk of the book is written 22 years after that, but it flips back and forth in time, so the reader sees how the relationship between Mia and Nick developed. How they fell in love and how she became so integral to their modified family. What's obvious from the beginning of the story is that Mia and Nick have not seen one another for 10 years, but the reader has no idea why. How the heck did this relationship fall apart? They were together for 12 years...wholly in love for 12 years...committed for 12 years. What could have possibly happened?
It all slowly unfolds as the backstory catches up with present day...both running simultaneously throughout the book. And with each piece that got revealed my heart shattered a bit more. I'll admit that I was a sobbing mess throughout most of my reading of this book. Nick and Mia had the best kind of love, but no one is impervious to the crushing blows that life can deal and this small family dealt with so many of those. Seriously...grab the tissue box for this book. WOW!
And I'm not sure what else to tell you that won't give away key things throughout the story. This author has written another series built around brothers that's been hugely successful (this is actually a spin-off from that series), so she knows how to write family dynamics. In this family, Nick is the head. Not only did he take on raising his family when he should have been partying at college and having a good time, but he made it through college and is now an FBI agent. He was very aware that his responsibilities were huge and made sure that Mia kept her dreams front and center. During the twelve years they were together...and raising his siblings...she finished college and went to medical school, becoming a very successful surgeon. Time was never something that they had much of. In fact while she was in medical school, they lived in different parts of the country. And that's why it's so hard when it all falls apart.
This book crushed me...in the very best way, though. There was so much emotion, so much beauty to the love between Nick and Mia. Their scenes together melted my heart...every single time. Nick is this huge, tough, stoic guy...but he'd do literally anything to take care of his family and Mia. The fact that that isn't enough to protect them from hurt shreds him. But at the same time, Mia loves him and his siblings just as much.
I loved everything about this book, and am counting the days until there are more added to this series. What happened between Luke and Nick at the football game and what happened in the aftermath was devastating. I can't wait for his story. There are three brothers with a story to come...Zack, the twin and playboy firefighter, Dallas, the other twin who was missing throughout most the present day scenes because he's deep undercover somewhere, and then Luke, the second oldest who's also military (I think...although it might have been DEA). They're all going to have fantastic stories. The author has already laid incredible groundwork for them and I can't wait.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but immediately upon finishing it, I went and ordered a final copy of it...along with all the McKinney books that this series spins off of. Hannah, the two year old sister was the heroine in book #2 of the McKinneys and I need to read her story immediately. Wow...just the glimpses throughout this story were amazing!
My only bit of sadness is that this book isn't available in print...but it was AMAZING!
