Jericho and Wade had been so close, once upon a time. First friends, then more than friends—and then, after Jericho’s escape, nothing. Wade’s magnetism hasn’t been lessened by a decade and a half apart; even when Jericho learns that Wade is the prime suspect in the death of Jericho’s father, the old connection still sparks.
When Jericho’s newly discovered half siblings are kidnapped, he needs to trust someone to help him find them. Wade’s a terrible choice, but Jericho’s never been known for his good judgment. Anyway, he’d rather make a bad decision with Wade than a good one with anybody else.
Something you should probably be aware of going into this book is that this is a romantic story that unfolds over several books (four, I think). As such, I'm assuming the romantic story line is going to be a VERY slow build, because there wasn't much to that aspect of the story in this book. Just hints at the feelings that used to simmer between Jericho and Wade, but not much else...just a little bit of hot chemistry that gave a wonderful tease at just how steamy they could become. So, this is a book that promises a romantic relationship, but it is not actually present throughout this book.
What is present throughout this book is the setup for the dynamic here. There were three kids who used to hang out together in high school...Kayla, Wade and Jericho. Jericho was the tie between the three of them because he slept with both Kayla and Wade...until he fled at the age of 18. He had to get out of this small town where his criminal father ruled the roost. But now his father has been murdered, obviously still up to his criminal history and Wade is somehow tied up in all those illegal dealings. Kayla is the sheriff and Jericho is an LA detective. But there's more to his father's murder than just some small-town petty crimes if the federal law enforcement presence is any indication. Jericho has no idea what he's walked into. Kayla's overwhelmed. And Jericho isn't sure if he can trust Wade or not.
Like I said, a lot of this book is setting up what's to come. It took until the end of the book before everything was settled into what it's going to be for the rest of the series. But even with that, I really just truly enjoyed the story for entertainment purposes. Just don't go into it expecting romance in this particular novel...but I do think it's setting up for that brilliantly...so I'm excited to just wait it out because I can't wait to see what happens next. And I think it's going to be necessary to read this book before the rest of the series. It's all going to build on itself. So, plan to enjoy getting to know the characters and dynamics with this first book...and then you'll be like me...waiting for more to come! I'm excited about the possibilities for this new series.
Cops and bad guys with a very obvious conflict that I have no idea how the author will resolve it. It should be a great, suspenseful ride to come... Bring on book #2.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
