Callie Talbert hasn’t seen her sister’s ex since high school. But after Callie bumps into Jared while she’s grocery shopping with four-year-old Logan, there’s a spark that wasn’t there before. Jared quickly realizes that her deaf “son” is the same age his own child would have been. When Jared demands to know more about Logan, Callie panics. There are things she just can’t tell him. Besides, Jared’s a bad-boy rocker, not a dependable father figure. He’ll move on to his next gig soon enough . . . right?
Trouble is, Jared refuses to be pushed away, and the more quality time he spends with Logan, the more he’s captivated by the woman Callie has become. When the truth is revealed, Jared only hopes that the three of them have what it takes to become a real family. My Review:
Oooh, a secret baby story with a twist...and I liked that twist. I also really liked that this was somewhat of a friends to lovers story. Because while the hero and heroine haven't been in touch the last five years, once upon a time they were best friends...until hormones and teenage crushes got in the way.
Callie is the type of heroine I love to cheer on. She's tragic in that she's lost her entire family and had to face single motherhood alone. She's given up her dreams and is slowly wearing herself to the bone to do everything she can for her son, Logan. She is not ready for the disruption that seeing Jared in the grocery store brings.
Jared was several years older than Callie, but was well aware of her even when they were teenagers. But she wasn't the sister he slept with...no, he had hot sex with her sister a single time instead and there were repercussions from that. But Jared has lived his life blissfully ignorant the last five years, chasing after his career as part of the up and coming rock band. So, he's blown away when he sees Callie in the grocery store, although he doesn't have any reason to become suspicious. Callie was always his friend and the more he gets to know the adult incarnation, the more he realizes that he wants to be more than friends...and then things get complicated.
I really enjoyed reading this book and thought that it was really well done. I've never read this author again, but am looking forward to more from this series and I need to go back and catch-up by reading Nolan and Hailey's story. While a secret baby story is a tried and true trope, I liked the twist in this one. Adding in the backdrop of the rock band who is just really coming into their own and on the cusp of releasing album number two...and I liked just about everything about it. I loved all the guys in the band and I loved how the author wrote Logan's deafness. She nailed the 4 yo psyche, too.
Overall it was just a really good, entertaining read and I enjoyed it a lot. I'd definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
