As far as Austin is concerned, Lexi can turn her snazzy little convertible around and drive back to Chicago. After all, she ripped his teenage heart apart and turned her back on the town he loves. But from the moment he sees her again, he can’t get her out of his mind. Even her smile messes with his head.
When an evening of conversation turns into something else, Lexi and Austin agree to be friends again—with benefits. But as Lexi starts making plans to return to the big city, Austin realizes he’ll lose her a second time unless he can show her that what she’s searching for has been right here all along.
Note to readers: This is straight contemporary romance, not romantic suspense.
I really, really liked this story. This is a new contemporary romance series built around this small town in the Colorado mountains of only about 1500 people. This first story features Austin and Lexi who were desperately in love all through high school. But as they came to the summer after their senior year, they had different dreams and they broke up. That break up shattered BOTH of them and they each blame the other.
For Lexi, she couldn't wait to get out of this small town. She left 12 years ago and never planned to come back, but her stepmother called to let her know that her father was losing it at the same time that Lexi found herself unemployed, she came home to help. And of course one of the first people she saw was Austin.
Austin loves his life in this small town. He's on the Search and Rescue team, and leads a fairly fulfilled life as a park ranger. He spends his life outdoors and every single day is a different day. No stuffy desk job for him. His one regret...Lexi.
I loved this small town and the Search and Rescue team that the series is going to be built around. I loved the rock climbing scenes and feel like I learned a lot about the art of rock climbing. And wow...that cliff-hangar scene for Lexi was amazing. I loved the lore of the Knocker and the bit of mystery Joe brought to the story. I also LOVED the glimpse of Zach from Pamela Clare's other series.
And of course, I have to give a bit of time to the relationship between Lexi and Austin. I love second chance at love stories, and this one was a fabulous one. I don't know if I've ever read an m/f romance that was as hot and sexy as this one. Whoa...Pamela Clare knows how to write smexy scenes...made me a happy girl. But the only reason they worked so well in the sex scenes was because of how expertly she wrote their chemistry. It was extremely well done.
Overall, I LOVED this story. I cannot wait for more. In the meantime, I've ordered it in print so that I can re-read it many more times.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
