Ice rescue diver Derek Warner never meant to be a hero. But when two little girls go missing, he's the first in line to bring them home-even if that means scouring the wilderness with the woman he once loved and lost, Artemis Rey.
Artemis has never stopped wanting Derek. Now, racing to find the girls before it's too late, minutes turn to hours. Night falls. Old flames rekindle. And a danger grows in the darkest wilderness that may be more than even the Search and Rescue brotherhood can hope to face...
This novella has a quick and action packed introduction to the new world of the search and rescue group in this remote region of Colorado. The story starts out with a kindergarten class on a field trip to see what search and rescue does, but when a challenge between students ends up with one in the frozen water, the rescue gets very real very quickly. To complicate things, the girl who challenged the boy to go onto the frozen lake then runs away when she thinks he's dead, which requires a rescue too.
Four years ago Artie and Derek were in love, but he was a screw up and on the way to ruining her life, so he broke up with her. She moved on, although that didn't quite work out for her. Through this search and rescue they are able to reconnect. It happens fast, but I was okay with that because they had that relationship before. It doesn't take them long to reconnect.
From the moment the book starts there is a lot happening, but I liked that. There isn't a whole lot of time to really connect with the characters, but it was a fabulous introduction to the search and rescue group and I'm so excited about this series. There are so many places the author can take the stories and I can't wait to see how exactly she does that.
Note: This book is FREE so if you're tempted at all by this introduction to this new series, go pick this one up. You can also be assured that this novella is a complete story for this couple. It's not just an intro to their romance like so many intro novellas for new series...there is a good finish for the two characters in this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
