My Review:
I absolutely loved this new dystopian world created by Rebecca Zanetti. The world was completely creative and interesting. The characters were wonderfully complex and the story line was riveting. From the moment I started the book, I didn't put it back down until I was done. It was such a good read.

Lynn is an anomaly. As the head researcher at the CDC when the virus scorpius began, she somehow became a test subject after becoming contaminated and now has a glowing blue heart. No one knows for sure if she's dangerous or not, but all signs show that she has something to do with the spread of this virus which has killed 99% of the population. She doesn't have any allies.

But what she does have is knowledge...both in who is the true danger to society and maybe how they can all get past this disease medically. But she needs help for those things to happen...so she goes in search of the biggest baddie out there...Jax Mercury.

When scorpius happened Jax was a soldier, but his past life in the gangs of LA meant that he knows how to survive. He now has a gang of about 500 members living in the middle of downtown LA, but everyday their quality of life becomes further in danger as their supplies diminish and more people grow sick. But before they lost internet, he was already famous for the way he was taking care of his people in the hard streets of LA...which is close to where Lynn needs to be so she searches him out.

This disease and what's it has done to humanity is both scary in that it could happen and so impressive as reading material, because the whole world Rebecca Zanetti has created feels so creative....and terrifying.

I loved Jax and Lynn together. They've both lost so much and have hardened themselves so much against emotion, it's beautiful to see them come together...and care. They both had great character arcs in this story and their relationship really worked for me. Their world has taught them to be so hard, but it's really beautiful thing to see them both open up in this book...even if it's not an easy thing for them. But this isn't only a story about them.

There are so many amazing side characters...Wyatt, the ex-49ers player with the heart of gold; Tace, who's disquiet toward the end of this book broke my heart; Raze, the mysterious fighter; Sami, the fabulous girl in the group who's not afraid to apologize. I loved each and every one of them and throughout the story, my heart broke for several of them as they went through their different trials.

This is a fabulous start to this new series. I can't wait for more.

Note: now that I've read this one, I see that there was a prequel novella, Scorpius Rising. I haven't read it and didn't ever feel confused about the world, but several other reviewers said it enhanced their view of the world going into reading this one.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
