After losing almost all of her clients in one fell swoop following an accident involving whipped cream, private chef to Hollywood’s elite Roxie Callahan gets a call from her flighty mother, saying she’s needed home in upstate New York to run the family diner. Once she's back in the Hudson Valley, local organic farmer Leo delivers Roxie a lovely bunch of walnuts, and soon sparks—and clothing—begin to fly. Leo believes that everything worth doing is worth doing slowly…and how! But will Roxie stay upstate, or will the lure of West Coast redemption tempt her back to Tinseltown?
There are certain authors you read and would like to see into their brain just to see how they come up with things. For me, Alice Clayton is one of those authors. This book was so funny. I'd catch myself laughing out loud in the empty house while I read it. Someone needs to go through and count up how many food puns she used when discussing sex. OMG, they kept me laughing throughout the entire book. Between cornstalks, cucumbers, and nuts, I will NEVER be able to look at fresh produce or a farmers market the same way again. LOL.
This book is told entirely from Roxie's pov. She grew up in this small New England town with her wildly romantic, hippy mother who fell in and out of love at the drop of the hat. As a result, Roxie wants nothing to do with this life. She left for culinary school and then went to LA with plans never to return. But when her mom gets chosen to go on The Amazing Race just as Roxie's job as a private chef falls to pieces, she comes home to run the family diner...and there she finds Leo.
Leo happens to be the local hottie farmer who just happens to be a pedigreed New Yorker, too. We're talking big money here, but he seems like a normal guy...and even more importantly, he's all in with Roxie's summer loving plan. Sex for the summer with no fear of commitment...what guy would honestly ever say no to that? But of course, as will happen...feelings develop and deepen.
There was so much to love about this book...the food puns, the small town, the diner, the farmer's market, Leo's farm, the swimming hole...and OMG, the food porn. And the surprise was the BEST because I totally did not see that twist coming.
I also loved that the most popular hot guy from her high school days with his HUSBAND...LOVED the two of them and how they meshed with Roxie. I loved the cooking classes Roxie taught with them. I loved how she made the diner her own.
Every single little thing about this book simply made me happy. I really, really liked it. And we haven't even talked about the Little House on the Prairie references. OMG, it was just all good and funny and sweet and romantic. I read the whole book with a grin on my face.
My only complaint... and this is a seriously MINOR one... is that the book started a little slow, but keep reading...it picks up quickly at about 20% into it.
I DEFINITELY recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
