Maya McKay’s heart is as big as Jack Rhodes’s shoulders are broad. Their chemistry is out of control, but it could never work between them because Jack is more than just best friends with her cheating ex-husband—they’re like brothers. Maya, the sensitive, practical florist, has given up on love and is ready to settle for like. But now that Jack’s around again, he’s stirring up old feelings—and turning Maya’s fantasies into irresistible reality.
Jack blew his chance with Maya years ago when he stepped aside for his best friend, Will, and he’s still kicking himself about it. Maya was promised forever once before, and she got burned. But when Jack realizes that second chances aren’t going to fall out of the sky, he seizes the moment—and the woman he’s always loved—to show her how forevertruly feels.
This book is really based around Jack, even though the story is told entirely from Maya's point of view. Four years ago, Jack met Maya first, but stepped aside when his foster brother, Will, liked her. He stayed on the sidelines as Will cheated on her and as their marriage fell apart. As a foster kid, Jack truly appreciates his foster family that gave him a second chance...they earned his loyalty with 20 years of love. BUT he still wants Maya, even though as Will's ex-wife, she's completely off-limits.
For Maya, her entire marriage has left her with bitter feelings. The exception to that was her friendship with Jack. But Will got Jack in the divorce, something Maya has always regretted.
Unrequited love...this is a book about the one who got away, which is what Maya was for Jack. He always wanted her, but stepped aside. He's just that good of a guy and I loved that about him. This is a guy that you love to fall for because he's one of the good ones. BUT he's keeping one thing from Maya...and it's kind of a big something.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The set-up is good and believable. I liked the chemistry between Maya and Jack. The added conflict of the deal she's working with Griffin is nice to have playing out in the background. I also really liked Jack's job and his writer's block and how that all played out. And then the group of girlfriends...this is the first book I've read from this author, so I've missed out on the rest of the series, but I did love the friends and their viewpoints and what they added to the story.
It was a fun, light, entertaining read. I do love second chance stories and Maya and Jack had a good one. I definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
