Sexual Intensity: mild
When aspiring writer and dog trainer Evie Malone gets a call from a man seeking help with the dog he inherited, she’s eager to help—in no small way because his surly voice on the phone gives her good shivers.
Meeting Luke Kovacs confirms her attraction to the no-nonsense, socially challenged cop, but she’s got some unfinished business to take care of first. Business named Brad, an ex-to-be she’s been trying to let down gently.
Luke’s not really a dog person, but he’s willing to make an effort to settle in with his late aunt’s mutt. Especially with the help of a woman who makes him wish he had someone waiting for him at home.
When Evie goes to Brad’s place to break up, she’s shocked to find him dead on the floor. Worse, every time she turns around, she finds more and more evidence…and it’s clearly stacked against her. Though Luke believes her innocent, they soon find themselves in a race against time to prove it—before the real killer finds a way to silence her.
Warning: Contains a sexy Texas cop, a heroine who’d risk her life for an enchilada plate, and a string of adorable dogs. Oh, and Sea-Monkeys.
This is a LIGHT contemporary romance with a twist of romantic suspense. Notice I said light. This is not a book that needs to be taken too seriously because if you do, you won't be able to enjoy it. Because there are some aspects (maybe a lot) to the story that just don't work in the real world...at least not to the extent the author wrote them. And the heroine has a few (maybe a few more than a few) moments of being too-stupid-to-live. BUT...and this is a big but for a reason...this is a sweet, fun little book IF you are willing to suspend a bit of disbelief and just allow yourself to enjoy a fun, entertaining story.
This book is about Evie. She's a dog-trainer/walker/writer. She's spent the last four months trying to break up with her boyfriend, but every time she gets close, something happens and she wimps out. Then he dies...problem solved...or not, because it looks like he was murdered. Evie should be one of the prime suspects but the investigating detective, Luke, has a thing for her, so I don't think anyone ever really considers her a suspect (see there's that disbelief you have to suspend.)
Evie's a bit of a screw-up, but she's a lovable screw-up and the snark between her and Luke is just fun to read. Evie knows she should be a suspect, even if no one else agrees. She's also a romantic suspense writer, so she knows a few things about investigating crimes and sets about (read that as...bungles) her way into looking into Brad's death too. Which usually results in her life being in danger.
The story edges along toward ridiculous, but I'll be honest...I really enjoyed reading it. It was fun. It was snarky. It was like the corn-ball cozy mysteries with a romantic suspense aspect thrown in on the side. I never was sure who did it because they were all crazily guilty...to the point where I began to suspect either Luke or Jesse, Evie's roommate, because they were about the only ones acting crazy suspicious. And I'll admit, when it all was revealed the reasons behind it all made complete sense.
It was a fun book and I definitely enjoyed reading it. Absolutely the best thing about it was Luke's initial scene and him describing his relationship with his new dog and then the banter between him and Evie. It absolutely made the book. I liked reading it and definitely recommend the book if you're in the need for some light, fun entertainment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
