Fairy-In-Distress team member Duncan Molar’s mission is as simple as it is desperate. Find his missing best friend, banshee Cara Wallace, before an assassin lights the magical fuse that will unlock her scream, wiping out the last merrow colony on earth.
Since the day he rescued her from a fishing net, the near-victim of her very first scream, they’ve been joined at the hip, he helping her with her telepathy, she helping him remember the beautiful side of being a fairy.
When he finds her, the crisis isn’t over, for the unreleased scream could kill her…unless he gets her to a remote location and figures out a way to release it safely. The solution blows them so far apart, Duncan’s back to square one. Doing whatever he has to—including sacrificing his job with the FID—in order to save her.
Because secretly, he’s been in love with her for a decade.
Warning: A determined fairy, a banshee-in-distress, and a djinn that will only make matters worse.
Aww, I have so much love for this book. First of all, Duncan and Cara...such a sweet friends to lovers story, which I adore. It's a May/December romance. He's a couple hundred years old...she's *ahem* a bit younger, so he thinks it can never work. He's immortal. She's mortal. He just sees no way for them to ever work longterm and it's certainly not worth the threat to their friendship, but then she disappears and is in danger. See, Cara is a banshee and she has a scream building. If she doesn't let it out, she'll literally explode.
I love the way the story unfolded. The reader gets to see Duncan and Cara at several stages of their friendship starting when she was fifteen and he saved her. That's what he does...he's a Fairy In Distress (FID) agent. And there is such a difference between them. Duncan is old and worldly. Cara has her own little world and has never been allowed out of it. It's not just a difference in age, it's a HUGE difference in life experience, but they fit...seriously, they fit so well. I loved that. Even Duncan realizes it's different with her, although he fights letting them become anything more. He thinks she deserves better. And...gah...I could feel for Cara. She wants more...she wants to see things and go places, but her role as a banshee has her tethered to the mermaid world. I couldn't blame her for that restlessness, although it killed me knowing what Duncan was going through. There's a great build-up to this. It's almost like there's two full stories to this book. Because it builds up once to one big event and then does it again for another. Love!
But this book is so much more than just their romance...it's an incredible, fantastical world filled with not only banshees, but also fairies, mermen, and djinns. I loved every aspect of all that and am excited to see where else this series leads. This is the first book and it definitely started off with a bang. There's action and suspense and I simply enjoyed reading it. I can't wait for more.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
