Sexual Intensity: spicy
The duo think they’ve finally found refuge at the Seong’s cabin, but things aren’t quite as peaceful as they seem: John’s parents are missing. Maggie, their teenage sister, resents Gabriel for treating her like a child. No one knows what, exactly, is going on in the outside world, and in the midst of all that, Arden and Gabriel are finding that there’s a thin line between love and hate, indeed. My Review:
I always forget how much I love dystopian romance until I pick up a really good one. Hint...this was a really good one.
In this book, Arden and John are roommates from Rochester, trying to get to John's family home in upstate NY, after the electrical grid went down. They tried to stick it out, but as the weeks went by, it became more and more dangerous and they decided to flee. They almost made it when they were attacked by two desperate, vicious, starving men. John's older brother, Gabriel, saved them. But he resents and blames Arden that he had to do it. Gabriel is a doctor...killing in cold blood is not an easy thing for him to accept even though he had no choice.
So immediately, Arden and Gabriel are at one another's throats. Can you say sexual chemistry? Yep, they have it and it makes this book so incredibly sexy. But that's not all there is to this story. It's a dystopian so this family is having to deal with a lot of fear. Their parents are missing and no one knows why the power grid went off line. Luckily, John and Gabriel's parents own a very secluded cabin in the middle of the woods, and they also own a store that they cleared out and stocked the cabin with when the power went out. They have supplies. They just have to survive the crazy humans that have gone insane without order.
I liked the set-up. Dystopians aren't easy because it's a whole new world within a world that we know. This is early days so everyone is still adjusting to the new normal, but I loved Gabriel's take charge attitude...even when it did rub Arden the wrong way. I love that he's a doctor and so they have those skills if they need them too.
It's a really interesting set-up and I'm dying to know what exactly happened to kick off the "end of the world." I loved John and his close friendship with Gabriel. The brothers aren't that close, but they respect one another's relationship with her and I really, really liked that too. The snark was great. I kept laughing even in what should be horrific circumstances. The book is smart and fun and I really enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to read more of the story. Next up in the series is John's story...Yay!!
