When her secretly filmed tryst shows up on the internet, Michelle Alger goes on the run. She has no choice. Not only was her one-night stand the son of a US senator, but he’s been murdered—and she’s the number one suspect. With both the senator and an avenging drug lord on her trail, her life is in danger. There’s only man she can trust. He saved her once, but will he still be her hero six years later?
Captain Jeremy Malone and the rest of Delta Squad have the senator’s order: find the mystery woman who killed my son. But to Jeremy, she’s no mystery. Six years ago his team of Green Berets rescued her from the torturous clutches of a Colombian cartel, and he’s never forgotten her. His personal and covert mission: find Michelle before anyone else. When he and Michelle do meet again, the sparks are explosive and consuming. They’re also dangerous as hell.
Because with each new bit of evidence, Jeremy suspects that Michelle’s innocence may be a ruse—a beautiful trap set by a woman who has even more secrets yet to bare.
I adored the first book in this SBG series, about a group of private military contractors, so I had very high hopes for this one. Overall, it did not disappoint.
The book starts six years prior to present day when Jeremy was an active duty Green Beret doing a cartel raid in Colombia. In the course of the mission, he rescued Michelle, who had been with the cartel for over a day...by the time they got to her, she was not in good condition anymore. That single mission changed their lives in more ways than one. For Jeremy, it brought him to life in SBG as Cappy. For Michelle, it took her to WITSEC because of the cartels. They both have a LOT of enemies out there coming at them from different directions because of the events that happened during and leading up to that raid. They just don't realize that they are lurking.
Michelle is still extremely traumatized from her captivity. To the point where she hasn't had a relationship since. She's working to overcome that, but in the chaos of trying to have sex, instead ends up as chief suspect in the murder of a Senator's son. That senator is the main supporter of SBG, and he calls in Cappy's unit to find her. But Michelle calls Cappy to help her too. They had an instant connection during her rescue (which just felt slightly off to me).
Like the first book, this book is action packed from page one. And it's a huge team novel so there is a lot of action and dialogue between a lot of characters. P.A. DePaul does an incredible job with this dynamic and showing the closeness of the team, even when some of them are at odds. My favorites at this point...Romeo and Magician; and I still love Talon although he had a different feel to his character in this book than he did in the first. He's gotten harder and I think that just makes me love him more.
There are also a lot of layers to the suspense story line. It didn't feel like there were any shockers, but the way the pieces all laid out was a great puzzle that I enjoyed. Overall, it was a great book. I love military style romantic suspense and this series is a great one for that. I always love the tight teams and this one is one of the best teams out there. LOVE!
I'm ready for book #3!!
(Little annoyances that weren't huge issues, but they did affect my overall rating...insta-love/connection although the characters didn't see one another for six years, 'mine', continuous breakdowns/flashbacks from Michelle which weakened her overall as a character.)
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
