Story Overview:
First love. Second chance?

As the daughter of a hoarder, Phoenix Fuller had a tough childhood. So when the handsome, popular Riley Stinson became her boyfriend in high school, she finally felt as though she had something to be proud of. Phoenix was desperate not to lose him—especially once she found out she was pregnant. Yes, she might have acted a bit obsessive when he broke up with her. But she did not run down the girl he started dating next!

Unfortunately, there was no way to prove her innocence. Now, after serving her time in prison, Phoenix has been released. All she wants to do is return to Whiskey Creek and get to know her son. But Jacob's father isn't exactly welcoming.

Riley doesn't trust Phoenix, doesn't want her in Jacob's life. He is, however, ready to find someone to love. And he wants a good mother for his son. He has no idea that he's about to find both—if they can forgive the mistakes in their past…

My Review:
This book. Wow. I knew it had the set-up to be really good and emotional, but I had no idea. I literally cried...well, I can't even count how many times...while I was reading this book. My heart broke for Phoenix. OMG, this poor girl. Her crime...she fell in love at 18...and spent the next 17 years in prison for it. Seriously, even now I'm tearing up thinking about her tragic story.

For 6 weeks her senior year in high school, Phoenix dated Riley. He was a popular kid from the right family. She was an outcast being raised by a single agoraphobic, hoarder mother with mental issues. Riley was Phoenix's first and only boyfriend and she was shattered after he broke it off, due to pressures from his family. Then she found out she was pregnant and he started dating someone else...Lori, who was run over while Phoenix was driving. It was a horrible, tragic accident, but it wasn't Phoenix's fault. No one believed her so she went to prison for murder for 17 years and never got to see her son, Jacob, again after he was born.

Seriously, tragic does not even begin to cover how unfair Phoenix's life is. But now she's out of prison and is back in Whiskey Creek. She wants two things...to know her son without causing him any further embarrassment and to take care of her mother who never leaves her trailer. Phoenix is tough, but so vulnerable. She doesn't want to draw attention to herself. She doesn't want to cause waves in Riley or Jacob's lives. She only wants to see her son...if he's okay with it. She's nice to the point of putting herself out over and over and over again. Every penny she's made while in prison she's sent to Riley for Jacob's care. She's self-sacrificing in the face of doing ANYTHING she can to make Jacob's life easier. When she was 18, she had no support so the town ran rough-shod over her. She has even less now. My heart literally wept for this women and all that she's sacrificed and continued to sacrifice. And it would be so easy for her to be bitter, but she's not. She's a gentle, sweet soul and that shows up more and more and more.

The other side of this is Riley. When he was 18, he was weak and stupid and allowed the adults around him affect his reasoning. He didn't give Phoenix the benefit of the doubt. In fact, he didn't even show up the day she testified in court. She was completely alone and he abandoned her too. The sad part of this is that he truly loved her. He was just too young. They were both too young. But now it's 16 years later. He's never allowed any interactions between Jacob and Phoenix because he wanted to protect Jacob. He quickly comes to see that was wrong on his part...so wrong. And that's just the first in a long line of painful self-realizations for Riley.

Honestly, these were the moments that crushed me while reading this book. Phoenix knows she was stupid in love and borderline obsessive about him back then. She's doing EVERYthing she can to negate that now...just as Riley is beginning to see how everyone else twisted her actions in his mind so that his vision of her became skewed. It's painful to read. His mistakes. Her immeasurable pain and loss. They were only 18 years old and she lost half her life because of stupid, idiotic mistakes made by two kids too young to know better. And now she's trying to get to know her 16 yo son.

Everything about this book was tragic. My heart was shredded while reading it, but I loved Phoenix. This is a story of the strength of a mother's love. She should be bitter. She should be hard. But her love for her son has kept her heart open and beautiful. She doesn't trust herself around Riley any longer. Loving him cost her everything and she can't trust him or even her own self to keep that from happening again. But she loves Jacob without question and that makes the book beautiful. It was wonderful to see their relationship develop. I also really loved Jacob's talks with Riley. They're closer than most father and sons because there really isn't that much separation in age. I loved how Jacob became a champion for a relationship between Riley and Phoenix, but how all three of them know that nothing can touch her relationship that's developing with her son. It's a wonderful story of hope when there's not much positive to build on. But it's also a story of the healing power of love and I adored it for that.

I bought a paperback copy of this book for my keeper shelf and I can promise you that I will re-read this one several times over. It was a GREAT book!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Total Surrender by Rebecca Zanetti

My Rating: A

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Series: Sin Brothers #4
Main Characters: Piper and Jory
Release Date: March 2015
Publisher: Forever Publishing

Sexual Intensity: hot

Story Overview:
A fight he must win...

Piper Oliver knows she can't trust him. They warned her that the tall, dark, and sexy black-ops soldier Jory Dean would try to win her over with his steel-gray eyes and deadly charm, but she won't be conned by this man they call a traitor. All she has to do is figure out the science necessary to save his life, and she's done. Something isn't adding up, though, and she won't rest until she uncovers the truth-even if it's buried in his deep, dangerous kiss.

A passion she can't resist...

Jory will do anything to reunite with and save his brothers-even kidnap the gorgeous woman who's working to deactivate the deadly chip in their spines. But the forces determined to destroy his family won't let them go so easily. Keeping Piper alive is more than he bargained for-and so is his burning desire for her. But with every second bringing him closer to certain death, can he afford to lose himself in her hot and willing embrace?

My Review:

Aww, the last book in this series...so bittersweet, but wow...what a phenomenal end to the series. Throughout Jory has been the fourth brother who was lost...dead, but we finally found out in book #3 that wasn't the case. But knowing that he's been out there on his own for over 2 years, this book did not disappoint. I loved him and Piper together.

Piper...who has her own connections to the commander, but is just as much a geek and computer nerd as Jory. They were simply perfect together and I did really love her character. She's tough and so smart...I loved getting to watch her use her brain to figure out all the twists and turns because everyone in this book is using her to a certain extent, so she has to figure out who the good guys and bad guys are.

And there are so many twists and turns in this book. I was with the family for Spring Break vacation while reading it, and they kept laughing at me as I gasped aloud several times while reading it. The book is non-stop action, but that doesn't interrupt the gorgeous sexy times between Piper and Jory. Wow, these two had some incredible chemistry. Simply put, the book is romantic suspense perfection. The romance worked for me, but I was definitely at the edge of my seat the entire book. In the midst of harrowing escapes, there is a countdown to when the chips in the brothers' spines detonate. And it literally comes down to the wire for Jory, whose chip has been damaged.

And we can't talk about this final book without talking about the brothers. They grew up in incredibly harsh circumstances and the only way they survived, especially Jory, is by leaning and helping one another. They developed a deep, ingrained bond and although their definition of family is very different from most, it is so much stronger than most. For that, I loved the last few chapters of this book. These four men started out alone and have created their own family that is full and large and so freaking beautiful in the love within it. I loved that little view into their all-new world. It was gorgeous and the four men (and their women) have earned a little peace and relaxation within their new family unit. As a reader and lover of the series, I loved that aspect of this book!

This was the final book in the series, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Rebecca Zanetti set it up so that this may not definitely be the final chapter. I love this world with it's super-soldiers who grew up without the traditional home setting and love. It creates some incredibly tough and angst-filled heroes and that makes for some great alpha heroes. I hope that she continues in this world, because there is still so much she could explore and I will be right there waiting in line to buy the books.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Hot Summer Lust by Juliette Jones

Title: Hot Summer Lust
Author: Juliette Jones
My Rating: B-

Genre: Erotic Romance
Series: #1
Main Characters: Sadie and Elias
Release Date: February 2015
Publisher: -
Links to Purchase:
Sexual Intensity: erotic

Story Overview:
Sadie Faraday is finally free. It’s summer and she just graduated from the strictest private high school in Tennessee. Ditching the confining uniform and the iron-clad rules, she wanders alone to swim in the secluded pond on the far side of her family’s farm. There, she revels – maybe a little too much – in her freedom and the warmth of the sun on her skin. Until she notices she’s not as alone as she thinks …

Elias Hayes just bought the thousand-acre property next door, as a getaway from the craziness of his high profile life as a country music superstar. Hot, hard-bodied and sun-bronzed, Elias stumbles across a sight which ignites a wild obsession and an all-consuming lust that will make this summer the hottest on record …

My Review:
This story is about Sadie. She just graduated from a very strict catholic boarding school where she was stifled her entire life. She is one of four girls and she's seen two of her sisters get knocked up and knocked around emotionally by getting sexually involved with the wrong guys. But regardless of that, she's willing to do and explore it all when a sexy stranger moves in next door and catches her naked and masturbating in the pond between their properties.

Sadie wants to go to Nashville and become the next big thing. What she doesn't realize is that her fling is the current big thing. The sex is definitely hot and heavy between these two. Sadie epitomizes young and horny and frankly, I hated that for her. She has prime examples in her house about what happens when you don't use your brain...at least a little bit. I know she's young, but...ack. I would rather have seen her character as horny, but smart rather than flighty and way, way too blonde. She gives blondes a bad name.

I love that she's a musician and seems to truly have talent. I love that Elias has the connections to help her get someplace quick, but I hate how completely naive she is and wish she had been just a bit tougher and more forward-thinking. If that had been the case, I think I really could have loved this book.

For my rating on this book, this is one of those, 'It's not you, it's me' situations. I think I'm simply over the 18 yo virgin who's up for anything even though she has no clue. I could have really loved this book without the over the top sexual escapades and focus, because I did truly enjoy the story behind it. But the author wanted to go with erotic romance and while I love a good erotic story, this one just didn't quite do it for me on that side of it.

And no, the story is definitely not over. But for me, I think I'm okay with being done with these characters.

Averaging out my reviews for all 6 novellas, I rate the anthology as a B+ overall.

Blurb: As a member of the New York Fire Department, single father Tim Davis is about as tough as they come. But underneath the muscles and tattoos, he still nurses a bruised heart handed to him courtesy of his first love. While on vacation with his son in New Orleans, Tim runs into the very woman that taught him about love before pulling it all away.
Holly Reynolds is rebuilding her life as an orthopedic doctor, far away from her home in New York City and her controlling father… the man responsible for tearing her and Tim apart. While she knows the hurt she caused Tim could never be forgiven, she can’t help the overwhelming feelings she still has for her first and deepest love.
Truths are revealed as lies are exposed.
Two people come back together again to explore the fragile emotional bonds that still keep them tethered, even as their passion ignites hotter than any fire Tim has ever had to put out before.

Off Duty by Sawyer Bennett
My Rating: B
My Review:
I do enjoy stories about second chances and this one was pretty cute. Ten years ago, Holly's father managed to rip apart Tim and Molly their senior year in high school. Neither has ever fully recovered from that, although they have managed to move on in their lives...until they meet unexpectedly again in the ER.

The saying Love is Love tends to be used in LGBT couples (at least in my experience, but I may be off here), but I really loved the twist on it in this relationship. I love that theme and the fact that these two were in love as teenagers. I enjoyed the set-up and pretty much everything about the overall story. That being said, the romance felt a little too soon for me. I understand it's a novella, but I needed just a tiny bit more of anticipation and exhilaration between the two. Just a tiny bit. I did like that there was resolution between Holly and her family, too. It was fun and sweet. Overall, I liked it.

After losing the love of his life to another man, Flash is heartbroken and lost. Wanting to forget, he heads to New Orleans. He finds the unexpected. A chance encounter could alter his fate or will she become his rebound?

Rebound by Chelle Bliss
My Rating: B-
My Review:
Short stories can be hit or miss for me, because it is really hard to develop a full story in a few words. I realize that, so I admire authors that do it well for this picky reader. This one didn't quite make it for me. While the book was really, really hot. The development and chemistry between the two characters happened off the page and the reader was just told how well they meshed in every aspect. I needed just a bit more of that shown in the story for me to connect with the characters.

Blurb: Jordie Thomas is looking for something to take his mind off of the woman he let go—or rather, pushed away—and the terrifying prospect of what will happen if his broken leg doesn’t heal. He’s ready to get back to his family and fellow teammates on the Nashville Assassins and get back onto the ice. However, with his injured leg in the way and his mind clouded by a certain woman, he needs a break that’ll help clear his head and his heart. With New Orleans in his sights, can this player—on and off the ice—find a way to get back to the crazy and reckless life he used to live? Find out and follow along as author Toni Also takes readers on one wild journey in this Assassins novella.

Wanting to Forget by Toni Aleo
My Rating: C
My Review:
Flat-out, I wasn't a fan of this novella. The story is about Jordie and is leading into the release of his novel, so it's showing where he needs to grow as a character. Unfortunately, there are too many problems revealed with him in this little story to the point that I didn't like him...at all. He's a jerk. He treats women like trash. He's in NOLA, trying to get over the girl he dumped because he loves her. (Yes, you read that right.) How he does that..by screwing as many women as possible. Yeah...NO!

Blurb: Dr. Derek Babineaux is intelligent, dedicated, and one of the best ER physicians in the fast-paced world of critical care at Tulane Medical in New Orleans. Always on top of his game, he’s thrown off balance when the newest staff member finally unleashes his hidden desires. Justin Delacroix’s job at the inner city’s busiest hospital might be just what he needs to ease back into civilian life after a long stint in the military. High-preforming shifts make working as a trauma nurse at TMC the perfect way to utilize his skills and quick reaction times. There’s only one problem, his attraction for one sexy ER doctor is off the charts, but he has his reasons for not returning Dr. Baby’s night shift advances. Or maybe he doesn't.

Closet Confessions by Kindle Alexander
My Rating: A+
My Review:
How did I not see that twist coming? But because I didn't see it, I LOVED it! Wow, this was a GREAT novella. I loved everything about this story. Justin's history and his difficulties with his partner, the hospital setting, Dr. Babineaux's aunt, the great, flirty nurses. It was all done so well  and so perfectly woven to create a great, romantic, sweet (and HAWT) story! Love, love, love. And that ending was simply perfection. If I had one complaint, it's that I wanted more...not because the story lacked anything (because it totally didn't), but just that I did really like these two characters. Maybe we'll get to see more of them in the upcoming SECRET. I can't wait!

Blurb: She spends her nights treating patients, but Dr. Jocelyn Drake’s own wounds are unfixable. Her ex-husband and his younger, bouncier girlfriend work just a few floors away at Tulane Medical Center, and they serve as a constant reminder of what Joss lost. But a fierce determination to continue her research project and a shred of remaining pride keep Joss from transferring out of the Big Easy. Carson Stephens recently returned from a tour of duty in the Middle East, and though willing women present themselves at every turn, his closest companion is loneliness. His night-shift work supervising the electrical and mechanical systems at the hospital is a perfect fit – it’s solitary work putting broken things back together. When the electrical system on Joss’ floor goes haywire, she’s frazzled by the sexy electrician who sparks her dormant sex drive. He’s brooding and cocky – so not her type. But if Carson has his way, his hands will work their magic on more than just the wiring, and he’ll show Joss a night of passion that restores her shattered confidence.

Healing Touch by Brenda Rothert
My Rating: A
My Review:
I liked this story a lot. It takes place over a single night, but the connection between Carson and Jocelyn felt real. That takes some real skill by the author to create a believable chemistry in such a short amount of time. I liked both characters and the glimpses of their back-stories...Jocelyn with her cheating ex and Carson trying to get on in the real world after life in the military. This is a Happily for Now story, but I could believe that it could easily turn into an Ever After story. I liked the characters and how they spent the night getting to know one another. And the Magic 8 ball was a really fun touch to the romance for Jocelyn.

Blurb: One lie can change your life. A web of lies can destroy it. Neil Ryan was a good Navy SEAL. He was an even better detective, but when an unmarked envelope lands on Ryan’s desk, long-buried secrets are resurrected and Ryan questions everything he thought he knew about justice, including who killed his mother. Now he’s chasing a ghost, swimming in the shadows of the past, searching for answers. All he’s found are dead ends and more mysteries. Ryan lands in America’s wildest, sexiest city tangling with a redhead, chasing down a dead woman, and trying to get his best friend to stop hounding him about a business he wants no part of. When a set up sends him straight to Tulane Medical, and into the care of the girl he never forgot, Ryan finds the strength and healing he seeks to unravel the mysteries of the past.

Swimming in Shadows by Eden Butler
My Rating: B+
My Review:
Hmm, this was an interesting story, but it's not a complete story. This is about Neil Ryan who is drowning...in life, in alcohol, in unanswered questions. He lost his job when evidence showed up that all wasn't right in the death of his mother. He can't give up the search, but he keeps banging his head against a solid wall. In the meantime, he's spinning out of control...and losing focus with the loss of his job. He needs to find out what actually happened, but he also has to start living again. Neither of those things happens in this novella, but it's an interesting set-up for his story which is coming soon. I think I could really like his character, but it's still a little too early in his story to tell. I do really like his friend, Sammy, and Sammy's cousin, who's also a very intriguing doctor. It's a good set-up book.

Will Molly and Gabriel’s never-quit attitude have them rushing head-first into love? Or will Gabriel’s secret pain stall their relationship before it can get off the ground?
My Review:
Wow, this book absolutely blew me away by just how good it was. I was sent an Advanced Reader Copy of this book and normally I'm not supposed to quote out of ARC's because they aren't final and could change, but I'm making an exception for this book. This line is one of my favorites I think I've ever read and it really sets the fun tone to this book. This is the way the first chapter ends...
"What are you looking for, Molly?"
She swallowed again, but at least she didn't look away. "Orgasms. At least three."

Molly and Gabriel had fun little back and forth banter like that the whole book that kept me smiling, but this book also had some major angst and feels going through it. I don't want to give any spoilers, but Gabriel was hurt when he was trying to save Scott, his best friend and Molly's brother's life. That plays out in a huge way throughout this book and makes for some of the sweetest and most beautiful scenes at the end of this book.

Molly is a normal single mother, trying to hold together the various threads of her life. She's also a kindergarten teacher who hates that four-letter "n" word...nice. It's been too long since she's gotten to be just a woman, but Gabriel sees that side of her when no one else does.

On the flip side, Gabriel is dealing with some major issues of his own...just learning how to live again, and not doing such a great job of that. When he's with Molly, he's so focused on her, he forgets all that he's lost. They are incredible together and every single part of this book made my heart sing. It was so, so, so good! I loved these two characters and 10 yo Josh and friend, Lily. Everything just set up for the perfect story featuring a wounded vet and a single mom and her kid who need him in their lives. Gor. Geous.

And Note: This book is listed as #6 in a series. I had NO IDEA it was part of a series until I started writing the review and would never have guessed that was the case. The book absolutely works as a stand-alone. In fact, I couldn't even tell you how the other books might possibly tie into this one.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

My Review:

Hands down, this was just a great romantic suspense story. The story switches pov between Isabel and Alec who are two very different people.

Isabel is an outdoor girl. She's an archeologist who inspects forestry sites for signs of past civilizations before the forestry comes in and does work. She spends a lot of the time outdoors, by herself, and she's perfectly okay with that. She grew up and her brother Vin raised her from her teen years. They were close until he died the year before under suspicious circumstances at the Raptor compound.

Alec is old money. He was raised to take up the politics mantle and in an effort to truly find himself, joined the military and ended up as a highly-decorated Ranger. When he got out, he bought the contracting defense company, Raptor, so he could continue to make a difference with helping in the training of the military. He found that wasn't enough though, so he is now in the middle of a senatorial bid. He can't afford for scandal to happen at his Raptor compound, but Isabel isn't letting things rest.

Isabel is sure something is fishy with her brother's death. He was as much, if not more, of an outdoor person than her. With his military training, there is no way he should have died from exposure which is what she's being told. But Raptor, and specifically it's CEO, Alec, have stonewalled her so she's decided to see what she can find out on her own. While doing her job with a bit of side-snooping, she discovers Alec in the middle of the forest, unconscious and hurt. Suddenly everything is looking suspicious, including both Alec and Isabel. No one knows who is trustworthy and who's not.

This book is action-packed and full of suspense and intrigue. But at the heart of all that is the sizzling chemistry between Alec and Isabel. I loved them even when neither was sure about the other, they still were incredible together. I also really loved that Vin had wanted to get them together before he died. This isn't a military novel per se, but it definitely has that feel because most the operatives and operations are from the military world. I thought the suspense line with the secret weapon was brilliant and loved how none of the attacks made sense until the weapon was revealed. So forward thinking and innovative. I liked the twists and turns and just overall loved the entire book.

This was my first Rachel Grant read, but it definitely won't be my last. If you enjoy romantic suspense, especially those with a military influence, I highly recommend this one!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
