Story Overview:

It had always been her…

Ten years had passed since the doors slammed shut behind Decker Calhoun, taking away his freedom, but more importantly, locking him away from Elizabeth Waters, the only woman he’d ever loved—the woman he’d given up everything for.

The day he was sentenced, he’d looked at her and said, No regrets, Lizzie. But he lied, because he did have one. Although he’s been out of jail for three years now, he was a year too late. Lizzie never knew how he felt and just months before he was released, she found somebody else and it’s too late.

Or maybe not. It seems that Lizzie’s boyfriend wants an open relationship and two can play at that game. Now all Decker has to do is convince Lizzie that he’s the better man…and has been all along.

My Review:

This book starts out with a heartbreaking, emotion-filled scene which sets the tone for the incredible bond between these two characters, Lizzie and Decker. What that initial scene doesn’t do though is tell you exactly how these two people got to this place in their lives.

Decker and Lizzie are best friends. 10 years ago he went to prison. He’s been out for a few years, but it was too late. When he was released Lizzie was already involved with Noel. Although in all honesty, Decker thinks that Lizzie deserves better than him, even though he’s totally in love with her. But he KNOWS she deserves better than Noel.

Lizzie has a few issues. She’s not a svelte girl. She has curves…curves that Decker loves and obsesses about although he never lets her know that. But like most women, she’s self-conscious about her weight and her boyfriend does everything he can to enforce her self-doubts about herself.

Can I just state right here and now how much I hated Noel? And I know that I’m supposed to, but listening to Lizzie’s inner dialogue after one of their interactions just hurt so much. I hate that she gave him so much control over her feelings about herself. Decker hates it too, but he’s working so hard to control that temper that got him into trouble the first time. Regardless of his feelings for Lizzie…he hates to see her hurt and that’s all that comes out of the relationship between Noel and her.

I love friends to lovers stories and this one was really good. These are both emotionally wounded characters. Neither one thinks that they are good enough for the other, although they are truly so perfect for one another. They just work together as good friends usually do. And the sexual chemistry between them was phenomenal. I love that Lizzie is a normal sized girl and how much that turns Decker on…LOVE that!

Like all of Shiloh Walker’s books, this one is full of angst. No one does it better than her. Honestly, she creates such beautiful, wounded characters. I read her books and just want to hold them tight and shelter her characters from anymore hurt. To be able to evoke that much emotion (and you should note that I had tears on the first page of this book) is an incredible talent. Seriously, no one does beautiful, romantic, heart-breaking angst like Shiloh Walker.

I highly recommend this one!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
