Story Overview:
Home is where her heart is...

When Presley Christensen returns to Whiskey Creek with her little boy after two years away, she has completely changed her life. She's made peace with her past and overcome the negative behavior that resulted from her difficult childhood. Now she's back in the small town that was the closest thing to home she ever knew;the town where she can be with the sister who's her only family.
There's just one catch. Aaron Amos still lives in Whiskey Creek, at least until he moves to Placerville to open a branch of the Amos brothers' auto body shop. And no matter how hard she's tried, Presley hasn't been able to get over him. Seeing him again makes the longing so much worse. But she hopes she can get through the next few months, because she can't fall back into his arms;or his bed. She's come too far to backslide now. And there's a secret she's been guarding;a secret she'll do anything to protect.

My Review:
We met these two characters two years ago when both of them were having difficulties dealing with life. Neither were in a good place and they made it worse by being together in a very bad codependent relationship.

In the two years since, they've both rebuilt their lives without each other...and haven't seen each other. Something that Presley is very thankful for. In their relationship, she was the needy one. The one that gave Aaron everything he wanted because she wanted him so much. But for him, he truly was just using her. She was there. Their sex life was phenomenal so he slept with her...over and over again, regardless that he didn't feel the same way for her that she felt for him. What he doesn't know is that... when he finally turned her away and shattered her heart...she was pregnant. It was an accident of failed birth control but she knew he wouldn't want the baby and would feel trapped by it. So she never told him.

But in Whiskey Creek, things are never that simple. Her sister is married to his brother so they are bound to run into each other...and it happens. And then they discover that their chemistry is just as powerful as ever, but this time, Presley is determined not to fall into the lure of Aaron. He hurt her once, she would be stupid to allow him to do it again. She's a more confident person now and stronger. She's determined to resist him. He doesn't understand that.

This was a good story in that I felt so badly for both of these people. They are so right for each other, but Aaron can't see and Presley refuses to give into it. And I'll be honest, from page one, I was completely hooked into this book. I did NOT want to put it down. But almost throughout the entire book....like to 96%, I was NOT seeing a happy ending coming. I'm usually not this torn up with Brenda Novak books, to the point where I felt almost sick to my stomach the entire time. Aaron...God love him...just did not have a clue and needed to desperately GET ONE! OMG...

And then finally, he did, BUT...

My one big complaint is that Aaron's final realization for himself happened off the page. I needed to see that lightbulb moment for him, as he realized why exactly Presley was so scared. I wanted him to feel regret for what he did for her...not just regret that he left her or regret that he hurt her two years ago. I get it...he's a compassionate guy, but I needed to SEE him feel more for her than compassion. And that wasn't there. In fact, there were a lot of things missing at the end of this book. No finish to the father getting out of prison. No finish to the stepmother and stepsister moving in. No finish to the baby story. It's like the author hit her word count and ended it all...about 20,000 words short of tying everything up.

But this is an ongoing series. There are three more brothers who still don't have a story so I suspect most of that will play out in future books. I'm also dying for Riley's book. Every time his story gets delved into, my heart breaks for him and especially for Phoenix. OMG, that book is going to be heartwrenching when it finally happens.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
