Story Overview:
The hotter they come, the harder they fall…

With a man like him, every mission becomes personal…
Ever since FBI agent Keira O’Shay started tracking a young boy named Mateo, she’s felt a connection even her empathic abilities can’t explain. She needs to save Mateo from the cult leader holding him hostage. Nothing can interfere with that—not even the reappearance of Luke Ransom, the hot-as-hell fire captain she’s regretted walking out on for three long years.

Losing Keira left Luke vulnerable—in every way. When they were together, the powers each possesses were mysteriously enhanced. But it’s the sexy, surprising woman beneath the tough exterior that Luke’s really missed. Even if she betrayed him utterly. And even if agreeing to help her uncover a government conspiracy means watching his life and his heart go up in flames again…

My Review:
Taking a couple of days to catch up with this series has been my reward for the work projects that have been sucking my time for the last 3 months. What a perfect reward because I'd truly forgotten how much I love this series. This is book#2 of it.

The basis of the series is that a team of 7 firefighters responded to a fire in which chemicals were burning. Those chemicals were part of some sort of experiment and it drastically changed the physiology of the team. They all developed powers....and had their lives shattered. There is an over-arcing story about that and the government still working on those experiments and trying to keep down the members of the team. They're a stubborn group. Although there is that over-arcing story, all the books definitely work as stand-alones.

This book is a romance about two members of the team that were dating when the accident happened three years ago....Luke and Keira. They meet up again in a cult rescue where Keira is working as a sniper and Luke is there with the ATF...they've both moved way past becoming firefighters...as has most the team at this point. Keira has issues stemming from her extremely troubled childhood that made things tough for them back then. Luke very much wants a family. Keira can't see herself as a mother. She has panic attacks about it even though she adores children. The thought of being responsible and possibly losing those children isn't a risk she can take. As a result, things didn't work out between them.

And there's the irony of the story. It's needing to protect a child that brings them together in this book. Keira feels a connection with Mateo, the child she was working to save from the cult compound. Something about this child touches her, but he's been physiologically manipulated too...in a way VERY similar to the firefighting team.

This book is full of twists and turns and each twist in the story made me smile more and made me more happy because they are so good in the overall story and series. OMG, I loved how the author wrote this book. Then there's Luke and Keira's romance...sigh. They have a mental connection and when they get upset their emotions bleed through so that the other person can hear them. They both care so much but have been so hurt and still have so many barriers and worries about being hurt again. That isn't a new conflict in romance, but set within this story, I loved it and loved their story. It was gorgeous and I can't wait to dive into book #3....Q!!
