Story Overview:
Welcome to the world of grim reaper extraordinaire, Charley Davidson. Try as she might, there’s no avoiding her destiny.

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is, well, grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple of months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above . . . or at least get dressed. It becomes clear something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. But the more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved.

Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans in Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, the hilarious fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling series from Darynda Jones.

My Review:

This book definitely felt like a transition book. So much happened in Book #3 that both Charley and the reader needed a little bit of recovery time.  By page 95, I was ready for that recovery to be over and then bam, like Darynda Jones heard my silent plea, the novel picked back up again.

There were some interesting developments in this book that I did not see coming...mainly with Donovan and Garrett and even Tate. I'm kind of sad that we didn't see more of these guys in this book and what we did see of them, seemed like it was wrapping up their story lines in Charley's life. I really hope I'm reading that all wrong. I felt like things with Charley's dad dragged out for a little too long, especially with what she knew about him. I did like the aspect of Charley's story line where she was dealing with PTSD and all the scenes between her and Reyes were VERY satisfying. My only real complaint about this one though is that the twist at the end seemed a bit too much like a certain very famous movie. I really did not like that, although the twist worked....I just wanted something a bit more original.

BUT in pure Charley/Darynda style, this book was very satisfying and entertaining. I enjoy every visit into Charley's brain, Barbara. It's always funny and full of laugh inducing thoughts which keep me giggling throughout the book. I love how things are developing with Reyes and how that entire side of the story line seems to be ramping up. One final note: I really hope that Quentin becomes a recurring character.
