Story Overview:

Zev Hassick is surprised and confused when he finds himself attracted to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. Zev is the son of the pack Alpha, regarded as the strongest wolf in generations, born to lead. And everyone knows a male shifter has to mate with a female of his own kind to keep his humanity. So shifters can't be gay, right?

Jonah Marvel wants a relationship with Zev, his best friend, the man he has loved since childhood. It wasn't easy to maintain that relationship over years spent living apart while Jonah studied to become a doctor. And then things grow more difficult when Jonah becomes his own patient. Before he can make a life with Zev, he has to understand his past and cure the unexplained ailments that plague him.

Zev and Jonah know they're destined for each other, but they're facing traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets that may threaten any future together.

My Review:

This is a shifter world with a very interesting twist to the Mating of shifters. It has to do with the balance between human and animal. In the males, the animal is stronger. In the females, the human is stronger. They have to Mate (or tie) to create a balance. Without that balance both parties can go insane. The glitch is that shifters can tie to whomever, unless they've found their true mate. Once they've found their true mate, that's the only person they can have sex with.

For Alpha, Zev, he found his True Mate when he was one year old. He's known it all along, but the issue is that his true mate is human and male...neither acceptable situations. Also Jonah has his own hopes and dreams. If the guys ever truly tie, then they really won't be able to be apart. Life is tough for them both right now with that separation, but it will be unbearable once they tie. They have to get Jonah through medical school first. As a shifter, Zev knows all this, but he hasn't shared ANY of it with Jonah. So Jonah just thinks he's slowly going insane with the issues that he's having. Most shifters tie by age twenty. These guys are hitting thirty...anyone else would already be insane from the pull between the two sides.

The book follows these guys from birth until they are thirty, so you get to see them at all stages of their life and relationship. I liked that. I also liked that their romance didn't evolve until later than you would expect. Before that they were truly just best friends although they definitely always had that bond. I also really enjoyed the fact that Jonah never knew that Zev and Pup were the same creature. Yes, he has a bond with the wolf too who's been with him throughout his life.

It was a good read. I could feel the bond between the two guys and as they began to decline, I really worried for them. I loved the mystery of why Jonah is the way that he is... a bit stronger than he should be as a human and he always has a sense when Zev is around. The twist with Zev being as strong as he was and a great Alpha for his pack made him a great hero. You got to see him strong and dominate with them, but then got to see his soft, mushy side with Jonah. But I truly loved that both guys are really VERY strong.

It was an interesting read and I definitely enjoyed it. I just saw that book #2 (which looks like goes back in time with another couple that we met in this book) is coming out soon and I definitely plan to pick it up too!
