She's been in love with Tobias, the cook, for the last four years; he's never made a move. Every Saturday night, she gathers with her three best friends - Peach, Millie, and Stacy - and drinks the same margaritas while listening to the same old stories. Intent on shaking things up, she puts her house on the market, buys a one-way ticket to Europe, and announces her plans to her friends... but then she meets Davina Granville, a strange and mystical Southern woman who shows Olivia that there is more to her life than she ever dreamed.

As Liv's latent magical powers come to the surface, she discovers that having an interesting life is maybe not all it's cracked up to be. The dark side of someone else's magic is taking over good people in town, and changing them into vessels of malevolence. Unwilling to cede her home to darkness, she battles the demons of her familial past and her magical present, with those she loves at her side - and in the cross fire. Can the most important things in life -
friendship, love, magic, and waffles - get her through the worst that the universe can throw at her?

My Review:
Overall... 4 star
Performance.... 5 star
Story... 3.5 star

This was such a fun book with such an interesting world....both they mystical side and the small town side.  The book opens with Liv unhappy with her life. She's been in love with Tobias for years and he doesn't want anything more than friendship. Her father abandoned her mother early in Liv's life and her mother never recovered from that heartache. She was a shell of a woman and Liv can honestly foresee that in her future, so she's decided she has to do something drastic to change things....she's moving to Europe. But then a strange woman comes into the diner where Liv works and EVERYTHING about her life changes. No longer can she say she leads a boring life, but she's soon wishing that she did as everything she holds dear, most especially this small town that she loves is in danger.

The most honest thing you can say about this book is that NOTHING is as it first appears...except the true feelings between Tobias and Liv. Yes, he's holding her at arm's length, but as a reader you can see how much he doesn't want to be doing that. Honestly, I'd say his feelings for Liv were even stronger than hers. It's painful to watch the two of them together...but this is a romance novel, so there's hope there too. I loved that Liv was so normal...she's every woman you know, with hopes and dreams and worries about her life. As her magic comes in, she finds new friends....Gibson, OMG!! I loved the little snippets in the story with her and Gibson. So sweet and it just shows what a wonderfully caring person she truly is. I loved that you could see Tobias's true feelings even when he's pushing her away. The mystery behind him was awesome and definitely kept me reading. You have to love a mysterious bad-boy and Tobias is one of the best I've ever read.

There's a whole slew of characters here and so many of them were amazing. I'm not going to detail each of them (although I'm really tempted to) because then I might tip you off to some of the twists and turns in the story line. Just know, it is a great cast of characters. And honestly, this is where the narrator in this book shone! Wow, she was awesome with her inflections and she managed to give each character such a wonderfully different voice. I loved her voices. Seriously, the narrator on this book was incredible!!

I'll admit, I keep debating going and buying the print copy of it just because I love that cover so much...seriously fun!! And I will definitely be looking forward to more in this series and from this author!

Wrecked by Shiloh Walker

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: -
Main Characters: Abigale and Zach
Release Date: April 2013
Publisher: Berkley

Sexual Intensity: hot

Story Overview:
Previously titled WRECK THIS LIFE

In the nineties, Abigale Applegate and Zach Barnes were the most beloved sitcom child stars in the world. Then they grew up and left Hollywood behind…

Whatever happened to Abigale Applegate?

She’s been wondering the same thing.

With her Hollywood dreams long gone, Abigale now has a nice, neat, uncomplicated life—until the day her perfect fiancĂ© needs to talk. Dumped, a little more than shattered, and totally confused, Abigale turns to Zach, her best friend since forever, to help her pick up the pieces. He does it with a gift—a copy of Wreck This Journal. She can vent her frustrations, and sketch out a new plan. Zach just hopes he’s part of it. Because he’s been in love with Abigale his entire life.

When the journal falls into Zach’s hands, he discovers Abigale wants a new man. And fast. Nothing more than a hot distraction. Zach has a strategy, too. He’s going to be that man. It’s his last chance. Abigale might be out to shake up her life, but Zach’s out to reinvent it. Now, all he has to do is convince Abigale that life can go as planned.

My Review:

What a wonderful, creative premise for a story. LOVED this book.

Zach and Abigale grew up together in Hollywood on a hit sitcom. Neither one is part of that life now, but they remain best friends. Abigale is now a caterer and Zach is a tattoo about changes in careers, right?

From their time on the set until present day, seventeen years, Zach has been secretly in love with Abigale. He's never wanted to ruin their friendship by letting it out there although all their friends are aware of it. Only Abigale has her head buried in the sand, but after her fiance breaks up with her, Abigale begins to re-examine her life and along with that is a new view of Zach and it's much sexier than she remembers it being.

This is absolutely my favorite trope and this book is a fantastic example of why I love it so much. These two characters know every little nuance about each other, so watching them discover each other sexually is so much fun. They both absolutely want each other, but are terrified of messing that first, but after a bit Zach pushes. He refuses to sit by and watch Abigale fall in love with someone else again.

For Abigale, this is all so foreign. She's never looked at Zach that way before, but now that she's begun, she has a hard time letting go of the idea. I loved the relationship between these two ...they're good together in all ways. It's just a really fun entertaining book to read. I love the dichotomy of Zach's change in career and that he's this tattooed bad-boy now...that made him all the more attractive. I liked the addition of the Wreck This Journal idea to the story...incredibly creative and a great impetus for the story. I liked it... a LOT!

But when Erin walks in on Blake touching himself and moaning her name, all bets are off.

Beauty Touched the Beast is a short erotic story of lovers finding refuge with each other. Not for those under 18 years of age or those uncomfortable with the subject matter.

"Sweet, touching and erotic, Beauty Touched the Beast was wonderful.” - Sizzling Hot Book Reviews

Author's Note: By popular demand, the story of Erin and Blake will continue in serial format! The first installment, Beneath the Beauty, will be available May 2013

Quickie Review:

This is going to be a quickie review because it's a quickie book. I like this one. It's a good premise with a hot follow-through. The set-up is a scarred, wounded war veteran who's having issues dealing with his physical looks now. He doesn't think that Erin, his housekeeper/college student could ever want him with the way he looks. He would be wrong. hehe.

I enjoyed it a lot and definitely look forward to more installments in the series. Blake and Erin are good together and I think the set-up is perfect, especially the way the story began between them.!

Texas Pride by Kindle Alexander

Title: Texas Pride

My RatingA

Genre: Contemporary Romance (m/m)
Series: -
Main Characters: Austin and Kitt
Release Date: March 2013
Publisher: -
Links to Purchase:
Sexual Intensity: hot

Story Overview:
When mega movie star and two time Academy Award winner, Austin Grainger voluntarily gave up his dazzling film career, his adoring fan base thought he’d lost his mind. For Austin, the seclusion of fifteen hundred acres in the middle of Texas sounds like paradise. No more cameras, paparazzi, or overzealous media to hound him every day and night. Little did the sexiest man alive know when one door closes, another usually opens. And Austin’s opened by way of a sexy, hot ranch owner right next door.

Kitt Kelly wasn’t your average rancher. He’s young, well educated and has hidden his sexuality for most of his life. When his long time wet dream materializes as his a new neighbor it threatens everything he holds dear. No way the ranching community would ever accept him if he came out. With every part of his life riding on the edge, can Kitt risk it all for a chance at love or will responsibility to his family heritage cost him his one chance at happiness?

My Review:

I loved everything about this book. The story set-up was gorgeous. I loved the history between these two men even though they've led extremely different adult lives. I loved that they were both so deeply in the closet, but still managed to connect. I loved the Texas setting. Living in Texas ranch country, I could relate to a lot of both the scenery and the attitudes. Then finally, I truly loved these two guys.

Kitt has a vulnerability just because you know bits and pieces of his history and it's heartbreaking. He never shows any emotion, but he has reasons for that. It made me as the reader, just love him more.  I love how much he wants and needs to care and protect his sisters and stepmother despite his awful relationship with his father. His determination to make the ranch a success is so admirable. I just love everything about him...and that's before we even talk about the fact that he's a hot cowboy. YUM!

Then there's Austin. A successful actor who's fed up with the life and the lies. He wants out so escapes to where he grew up. Despite never having worked on a ranch his entire adult life, I love the fact that he jumps right in despite the extremely long days and sore muscles. He's embraced his new life with everything that he is. His vulnerability is in the fact of how much he wants Kitt...and he shows it at every turn. I know these guys are in the closet, but his PDA's were so sweet and endearing. This relationship with Kitt is hard for him because Kitt is so closed off. Austin loves with his whole heart and it melted my heart at every turn.

I loved this book. Seriously, it was so good. Definitely a great read...and it's long which I loved because I didn't want this sweet story to end. It is going straight into my re-read pile.

It Had to Be You by Jill Shalvis

Title:  It Had to be You
Author: Jill Shalvis
My Rating: A

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Lucky Harbor #7
Main Characters: Ali and Luke
Release Date: May 2013
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Links to Purchase:
Sexual Intensity: hot

Story Overview:
Ali Winters is not having a good day. Her boyfriend left her, everyone in town thinks she's a thief, and now she's about to be kicked out of her home. Her only shot at keeping a roof over her head and clearing her name is to beg for help from a police detective who's as sexy as he is stern....

After a high-profile case goes wrong, Luke Hanover returns to his hometown for some peace and quiet. Instead he finds a bombshell brunette in a heap of trouble. As he helps Ali put her world back together, the pieces of Luke's own life finally seem to fall into place. Is this the start of a sizzling fling? Or are Luke and Ali on the brink of something big in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

My Review:
hmm, this book is definitely in the running for my favorite Lucky Harbor book. I loved Ali & Luke's story and their characters so much! There was just something about the way that Jill Shalvis wrote the characters in this one....they had a vulnerability to each of them which made them so incredibly heart-warming.

Both the characters are having major life crisis at the moment. While Luke has run away to Lucky Harbor to bury his head in the sand after a case went completely wrong, Ali is fighting resiliently hit after hit. It was interesting the way the each of them are presented. Ali has had a life of really rotten breaks, but she has stayed the most loving, giving, positive person. On the other hand, Luke is pretty embittered at this point in his life, until he begins to watch Ali and how she handles things. He finds himself grudgingly entranced and enchanted.

As a reader, I also found myself entranced and enchanted...just by the pure romance of their story. You can see the feelings between the two of them subtly growing on the page and it is so absolutely fun to read. Neither one of them wants or plans to fall in love, but they can't help themselves. I loved their chemistry and how they kept falling into bed, and then would promise each time that it would be the last time. Seriously, great chemistry.

That....and the resilience of their story. Things are bad....for both of them, and you think they've given up, then they pop back up suddenly ready to fight for more. I loved that aspect of the book. It made for two very memorable, admirable characters that I loved to read about and fall in love with as I watched them fall in love with each other.

I also really loved the glimpses of Lucky Harbor....the senior citizens and friend/firefighter Jack were definitely highlights to the story.

This is definitely a book going into the Keeper pile for many future re-reads! LOVED IT!!

Just One Kiss by Susan Mallery

Title: Just One Kiss
Author: Susan Mallery
My Rating: B

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Fool's Gold #11
Main Characters: Justice and Patience
Release Date: May 2013
Publisher: Harlequin
Links to Purchase:
Sexual Intensity: spicy

Story Overview:
He won't hesitate to put his life on the line...but will he ever risk his heart?
Falling for Justice Garrett was a high point in Patience McGraw's otherwise awkward adolescence. Even after he disappeared, Patience never forgot the boy who captured her heart. Now, he's back in Fool's Gold, California, and her passion for him is as strong as ever. But how can she trust that he won't abandon her again-and her daughter, too?

When bodyguard Justice Garrett was a young man, witness protection brought him to this idyllic town and he never forgot its warmth, or the sweet beauty of his childhood friend. He's returned to open a defense academy, and the Patience he once knew is all grown up. He can't resist her smile, or her curves. But Justice's past doesn't make him husband, or father, material.

Patience and Justice think they'll succumb to just one kiss... Then one more... Okay, just one night together. But they might learn that falling in love is beyond anyone's control.

My Review:
The premise of this story was fantastic. They were just teens, Patience was 14 and Justice was 16, when he completely disappeared without a trace in the middle of the night. That day had been the day that Patience planned to confess her love for him, her best friend, but she never got the chance. So when he shows up out of the blue so many years later, it's a complete shock. Even more shocking to Patience is the fact that the emotions from her adolescent crush are still there and so much stronger.

I enjoyed this book. I really did. I liked the premise. I loved the characters. I loved the fact that there was even a bit of suspense to the story line...I'm definitely a suspense girl. And of course, it's set in Fools Gold, so I already know and love the town. But something about the book just kept me from loving it as much as normal and I have no idea what exactly that was. Justice is really hung up on the fact that he may suddenly turn into the crazy s.o.b. his dad was, which to me seemed a lot far-fetched when he's shown no signs of that so far in his life.

I really enjoyed that both Justice and Patience are setting up new businesses within Fools Gold and the fact that Patience's business is a coffee shop makes my little caffeinated heart happy. I think the premise of a body-guard security school is interesting too.

This new book brings with it a new crop of characters, while still maintaining visits from all the characters of the other books. I'm really excited about the things that are setting up. I love this little town and that we slowly are coming to know everyone in it.

Once again, and this almost goes without saying, if you are a Fools Gold fan, you are definitely going to enjoy this book. While it wasn't my favorite in the series, it was still highly entertaining. These books work completely as stand-alones so don't worry about jumping into the series at Book #11. I recommend ALL the books in the series, but reading them all in order is certainly not necessary.
