Story Overview:
When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay’s large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.

My Review:
This book has generated a lot of buzz throughout the blogging community so when Christmas rolled around, I bought a print copy as a gift for myself (books are my favorite gifts to give or receive). And the good news is that I really enjoyed it.

This book is the story of Melody. She's escaped to this tiny town six hours from her hometown to get away for her abusive, obsessive ex-husband who's stolen everything from her, including her sense of safety. When she moved to town, she was living in her truck, but then found a job and some wonderful new friends at the town diner who gave her a job and a hand up. What Melody is clueless about is the MMA gym in town that is training the country's top contenders. She doesn't know anything about the fighting world. She just knows there's something about Clay that draws her to him and that's why she buys him a piece of pumpkin pie (that she can't afford) when he's eating alone on Thanksgiving day.

Clay is the current heavyweight MMA champion. He's the biggest name in the sport and has the millions of dollars and fans to show for it. But he hates that part of the sport...the public face he has to put on for the press and the public for a fight. He's usually not very good with people....not too surprisingly, most people find him a little intimidating. That's why he's so intrigued when the new sweet little waitress who seems just as intrigued by him as he is with her. It's even more baffling to him when he discovers that she doesn't know anything about the sport.

I liked this story. The MMA world is a new one for me in the romance genre and I wouldn't have thought that it would work so well, but it truly does. I really liked Clay, Jules, and Wyatt. These three who have been friends since childhood and make up the basis for this series. They own the local gym where Clay trains. Wyatt is a former fighter too (and Clay's main sparring partner) but he gave up his fighting career to become the town sheriff. And Jules is the local lawyer, but she's pretty darn tough in her own right...has several black belts in various forms of martial arts. I can't wait to read the rest of their stories.
