Story Overview:

THERE'S A FINE LINE  As an emergency paramedic, Lauren Boyer is dedicated and highly capable. Until an earthquake strikes, trapping her beneath the freeway with a group of strangers-including Iraq war veteran Garrett Wright...

Handsome and take-charge Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue efforts, even as the steely look in his eyes seems to hide dark secrets. When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett's bravery makes him more than a courageous bystander to Lauren. If they can save the others before time runs out, maybe, just maybe, they can explore the fire igniting between them-if the truth about who he really is doesn't pull them apart forever....

My Review:
This was a great book. I sat down to read the first couple of chapters on Christmas Eve, when I had a million and one things to do, and could not put it down until I hit the last page. I couldn't tell you the last time that I was so completely riveted by a book. There is action and suspense in this book from the very beginning and you hardly have a chance to catch your breath through the entire book. It was SO GOOD!

The book starts out with the ambulance crew of Joe and Lauren as they are headed out on a call in San Diego. Joe's driving and they are in the middle of one of those multi-deck overpasses when an 8.5 magnitude earthquake slams San Diego. By the time the dust settles, the ambulance is in the bottom of a cavern created by the falling overpasses. There are very few survivors and no way out of this cavern that's been created.

By the time the book settles, there are a few survivors in this cavern trying to get by with very little hope of rescue, knowing what kind of devastation must be above where they are at. There's:

*Lauren- paramedic who's always liked the aspect of her job that meant she didn't get attached to her patients. She stabilizes and leaves them to someone else. That isn't the case in this makeshift cavern where she is the only medical person on hand.

*Garrett- former Marine who seems to be hiding something, but he's so protective and sexy and proactive, you can't help but to fall in love with him.

*Penny- 18 yo who is at full-term with her pregnancy. Her parents kicked her out when she got pregnant and her only support system just died in the earthquake.

*Camden (not sure if I got her name right) and her Grandfather, Don- Don is a retired Vietnam vet. They are in an RV and that serves as ground zero for the group.

*Owen- a 21 yo convict whose body is covered with racial slurs. He's been in prison since he was 18 and my heart just wept for this kid who, despite all appearances, is NOT a bad guy. In fact, he's just the opposite.

*2 other convicts who have a gun and are a danger to everyone in the cavern

*Sam- I don't want to say much about Sam because you don't really get to know him until the end (he's unconscious throughout a lot of the book), but I cannot wait to read his story!!

I loved this book. There's a large and really varied group of characters, but I truly fell in love with all of them (besides the 2 bad-guy convicts). I love how they ban together and form this close-knit group just trying to survive.

I absolutely fell in love with Garrett and Lauren's story, at the same time that it broke my heart. I wasn't sure how the writer was going to write herself out of the whole that she created with their story, but she did it and she did it really well. Love, love, LOVE Garrett....OMG, serious hero material here. Seriously! He was always willing to give up whatever for the good of the group...over and over again. I loved his character and everything about his story line.

This book and the overall story is one of those nightmare scenarios and there are some absolutely horrific scenes here....they spend a week in this cavern with all those dead bodies. It's not ever one that anyone would want to imagine. The book has a dystopian feel because of the circumstances and it really worked for me. I just hope that if anything like this ever happens to me that we have a Garrett to save us all too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
