After Gin’s family was murdered by a Fire elemental when she was thirteen, she lived on the streets and eventually became an assassin to survive. Now, Gin is given an assignment by her handler to rub out an Ashland businessman, but it turns out to be a trap. After Gin’s handler is brutally murdered, she teams up with the sexy detective investigating the case to figure out who double-crossed her and why. Only one thing is for sure —Gin has no qualms about killing her way to the top of the conspiracy.
This is a book that I read purely for the fun of it, so I am not going to put as much time into the review as I normally would.
I love the creative premise of this....Gin is an assassin who hires on her skills for money. She doesn't mind taking out the scum of the earth even if it does mean breaking the law. Not someone you would normally consider as a good heroine, but Jennifer Estep creates a wonderful character through Gin.
Gin is tough....she's had to be. Her entire family was murdered and she was tortured heinously when she was only 13 years old. Fletcher took her in and taught her the skills she'd need to become an assassin and able to take care of herself. But she's still human and haunted by the deaths of her family and some of the things she's had to do to survive. She relies on Fletcher and his son, Finn, as her support system...both physically and more importantly, mentally.
In this book, we also meet Donovan....a strictly by-the-book cop in Ashland...one of the few who doesn't skirt the law. Gin honestly admires him even though she killed his corrupt partner. She is also extremely attracted to him...something that doesn't happen often to her. BUT Donovan can't accept his own attraction to her. He sees her as the criminal element. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops over the series.
There is a whole world to this series...elementals who gain their power from the earth, as well as the government of Ashland, and the assassin code of ethics. This first book was a good start. I liked that there was actual sex in this book...something that I've found to be a rarity in UF. I like how tough Gin is although Finn sees through that. I love their sibling-style relationship and do wonder if it will someday turn into more. Although right now I am satisfied with Finn's man-whore ways. I look forward to reading more in this series and next month, I will be on time so I can join in the discussion.
