Born to Be Wild, the second novel in the Three Musketeers series by Donna Kauffman, is another sensational story of a professional thrill-seeker—and the woman who might just be his ultimate high.
They call themselves the Three Musketeers: three lifelong friends, men who will put it all on the line in the name of honor and loyalty. Of course, that’s nothing for musketeer Zach Brogan, who risks life and limb daily as the owner of an adventure vacation outfitter. Skydiving into active volcanoes, hang gliding off glaciers, diving in shark-infested waters—Zach lives and breathes heart-stopping scenarios. But nothing can prepare him for seeing his childhood friend Dara again—or for the visceral reaction their reunion incites.
Dara Colbourne is living her professional dream: granting elaborate wishes to ill children. Yet when her new project puts her face-to-face with the guy who teased her all through school, Dara is far from pleased. But she is unprepared for the handsome, flirty man that Zach Brogan has become. As the two spar over trip logistics, the heat rises to levels neither can ignore. Is the thrill of adventure all there is between them, or can Dara trust this magnetic bad boy with her heart?
I'll admit that about 35% of the way through this book, I was pretty sure that I wasn't going to rate it very well. The constantly changing POV was driving me nuts...back and forth, back and forth. I kept getting lost about whose head we were in. But then something changed. I got caught up in the emotion of the story and found that I didn't care. Honestly, I have no idea if the POV was an issue throughout the last half of the book or not. From about 40% on, I fell in love with these characters and the emotion that Donna Kauffman wrote into their story.
And this is an emotional story. Dara lost both her father and fiance to accidental deaths coming from adventurous living. As a result, it's shaped her and her own natural adventurous spirit. It also REALLY affects her views of Zach....who adventures for a living. She can't risk her heart to another love like that. Then there is Zach. The consummate playboy and adventurer, he's never developed feelings for anyone like he has with Dara. To tell you the truth, he doesn't even recognize the feeling for what it is at first. It completely takes him by surprise.
Like most romances, this is a romance that takes both the Hero and heroine by surprise. As a result, they flounder for a bit to figure out what to do with it. Their back and forth comes across with lots of amazing angst and emotion that I just loved. The emotion was written so well. Your heart just aches for both of them. I especially loved how honest Zach was with his devastation with Dara. It's truly beautiful, and heartbreaking, and just so well-written. The emotion just jumps off the page. I really liked it!
Now I am ready for Dane's story. The last of the Three Musketeers and Dara's twin brother. The few views we've seen of him in this book, says that there is probably something more going on with him than has been revealed so far. I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what that is.
I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
