Story Overview:
Kit Colbana—half breed, assassin, thief, jack of all trades—has a new job: track down the missing ward of one of the local alpha shapeshifters. It should be a piece of cake.

So why is she so nervous? It probably has something to do with the insanity that happens when you deal with shifters—especially sexy ones who come bearing promises of easy jobs and easier money.

Or maybe it’s all the other missing kids that Kit discovers while working the case, or the way her gut keeps screaming she’s gotten in over her head. Or maybe it’s because if she fails—she’s dead.

If she can stay just one step ahead, she should be okay. Maybe she’ll even live long to collect her fee…

My Review:

Whoa this is such a fabulous start to this new series. I loved this book and I loved Kit! This definitely is headed onto my list of Best of 2012!

Kit's a half-breed aneira, which is basically an amazon, and because of her half-breed status, she was shunned and tortured by her family. And when I say torture, I mean torture. From the age of eight, she was beaten and tested systematically and brutally. As a result, she is one seriously tough chick, but her latest job is shaping up to really need that strength because it's looking less and less likely that she's going to come out of it alive.

Enter the cat shifters who are looking for the Alpha's nephew. Their Alpha Queen is flat out insane. Were's are already unpredictable, but Kit knows she would be insane to accept this job. She's honestly not given much of a choice though and she has a soft spot for kids. This vulnerable 15 yo's photo gets to her and she needs to do what she can to save him, although she's pretty sure the Queen's treatment of him is 100% to blame for his running away. The problem...if she doesn't find him alive, then her life is forfeit. And just to make sure she does it all right, she has a new shadow from the Queen's right hand man, Damon. Kit is NOT HAPPY to have him in her space and he is most definitely within her space A LOT.

The book is told entirely from Kit's pov, but you can tell...she drives Damon insane. He swings from being completely infuriated by her to admiring her tenacity. He honestly just doesn't know what to make of her. He's never met anyone like her before, but he finds himself admiring her more and more. I loved this mysterious shifter and really love where this story went with him.

There is a lot to this world and J.C. wove the details so perfectly...from the were's to the witches, to Jude and Damon, to Kit's tortured history that haunts her. I cannot wait to see where she goes with this. I'm already in love with this Urban Fantasy series!!

I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
