Story Overview:
The climactic novel in Lara Adrian’s New York Times bestselling Midnight Breed series—and her hardcover debut—Darker After Midnight invites readers to enter a thrillingly sensual world where danger meets desire.

In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After existing in secret for many long centuries, maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the entire vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire at the center of the conflict, before his push for domination can explode into catastrophe.
At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, once a morally rigid enforcer of Breed law, now a warrior fallen from grace, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. With addiction beckoning him toward eternal darkness, Chase’s path to redemption has never seemed more out of reach. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, a beautiful witness who identifies him at the scene of a mission gone terribly wrong, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman—and convinced she is something much more than she seems.
Pulled into a vortex of intrigue and danger she can neither resist nor understand, Tavia is uncertain whom to trust. And while everything sane and logical warns her against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that the handsome, deeply haunted male stirs something primal and ravenous within her. But even as she surrenders to her cravings, nothing can prepare her for the shattering truth of who—and what—she truly is.
As the Order’s enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Dragos and his Minions unleashing a hell on Earth like nothing ever seen before, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out and the streets running red with the blood of innocent lives, both Breed and human, together Chase and Tavia must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all—or die trying.

My Review:
Okay, I can't say anything more about the story line, because the description above is really well-done, although I have to admit that reading that first line about this being the last book in the series, makes me want to weep. The book takes up exactly where book #9 let off and I will be honest... at the end of book #9, I WAS WEEPING. The first chapter in this book is Lucan, Gideon, and Tegan blowing up the underground compound in Boston which has been their home for over 100 years. Seriously, I think that this was the hardest thing to read in the entire book and just proves to me how brilliant Lara's writing is because I am so emotionally involved with these characters.

From there it is really Chase & Tavia's book. Not only is there the normal romance between the main characters, but there is also a lot going on mentally for both of these characters. Chase is dealing with his inner demons and lingering on the edge of becoming a Rogue or committing suicide throughout most of the book. Tavia is dealing with a betrayal of everything that she thought that she knew about herself. Apart, each of them are falling apart at the seams. But together, they draw an incredible strength from each other. This book shows the absolute beauty and power of the Breeds mating bond. Then the normal suspense line going on in the background with Dragos and his mechanisms. BTW, those mechanisms in this book turn truly vile and set up a situation from here on out that is going to be truly different for the breed.

While officially, the Breeds series is over with this book, from what I understand, Lara Adrian is not leaving this world. She is simply taking it in a different direction, and that new direction is both shocking and wonderfully intriguing. You get glimpses of it in this book with Tavia's identity and Jenna's transformation which is giving them clues about the Breedmates origination. You will never guess it...whoa!

My only hope and prayer with the future series is that we continue to get to visit with these characters whom I have fallen in love with. This entire series has simply been so good. Lara Adrian writes incredibly well-done books with exceptional characters. I have come to love them and am not ready to leave them behind yet. If you haven't picked up this series, I HIGHLY recommend it!

Great review!

I think she just said she was changing the game but that the new books would be officially midnight breed's too. I am just hoping they aren't YA.....
