Story Overview:
Black Ops, Inc. operative Luke – Doc Holliday – Colter is taking some much needed down-time, making his way across the Peruvian Andes via rail, when banditos attack the moving train in the midnight hours. It soon becomes apparent that robbery is not their intent but the abduction of super model Valentina, who is traveling incognito while recovering from a public scandal involving her ex-husband, high profile US Senator, Marcus Chamberlin. Luke whisks Valentina off the train in a daring escape but the two of them become the targets of a relentless manhunt. Enlisting the aid of Luke's BOI teammates, they soon discover that Val’s intended abduction is linked to a plot put in play by an international gun smuggling alliance. The BOI team led by Luke, with Val along as a necessary pawn, must race halfway around the world to thwart a ruthless attack that would not only result in a devastating loss of life but destroy a tenuous peace the US and her allies have established in a vastly unstable part of the world.

My Review:
Doc has been one of the main members of BOI's (Black Ops Incorporated) from the very beginning and has made a significant appearance in most of the Black Ops books. As a result, I have really been looking forward to his book. It absolutely did not disappoint.

A year ago, Luke (Doc) was almost killed in an operation in San Salvadore. Since then, he has been floundering and doubting himself and his commitment to the mission. As a medic, he spends two weeks a year in Peru administering medical aid in the little villages. He's just finished his 2 weeks and is on the train back to the airport when 2 armed gunmen board the train. It soon becomes apparent that they are after the teenage boy that's been snoozing in the seat across from Luke. Armed with nothing but a Leatherman, Luke manages to take care of the bad guys and extracts the teen off the train, but is shocked to realize as they fall, that this is no teenage boy, but is instead the lingerie super-model Valentina.

You know I have not read a single Cindy Gerard book that I didn't love. She writes a great romantic suspense novel with lots of action, but also tons of emotion. This one absolutely lives up to that same high bar of excellence.

Luke is simply a nice guy. As a medic, he has a caretaker's soul. Everyone likes him and while he maintains a friendly facade, he hasn't let anyone see how torn up he's been since he was shot. He's had fantasies about Valentina since he was 15. He's a huge closet fan-boy and knows a LOT of the publicity info about her. It's entertaining to watch him realize her as a real person, although I had to giggle about his recurring "OMG, this is Valentina" moments.

Valentina, on the other hand, is living a life that is way too real right now. She's just come off a traumatic and very public divorce, and is trying to find her sense of self again. Then she is thrown into this fight for her life that is so far out of her comfort zone, but she continues to step-up an do whatever she has to. She's incredibly strong and resilient.

The action is non-stop on this adventure. That sense of suspense and action is only surpassed by Luke's ingenuity. My favorite had to be when he showed his ranching roots by wrangling the donkeys with their belts.

I loved how both Luke & Valentina were constantly doubting themselves and their ability to withstand the next challenge around the bend, but they never let the other one see it. They are both so incredibly strong even though they don't see that within themselves. They are both absolutely terrified of what is happening between them too. They don't want the connection that they are feeling, but neither one can help it regardless of the roadblocks that they each are trying to throw up between them.

Another great book in the Black Ops series. I am so sad to see that the next book, Last Man Standing, is the final in the series. There is a short excerpt of it at the end of this book, and OMG, it sounds like it is going to be another GREAT ONE!!

Christi!!!! I've finally made it to your blog!

LOVED LOVED this book! And I was able to read your review because I've read the book and my review notes are waiting to be typed out! I have a habit of not reading reviews of books I am reading/reviewing or going to read/review soon, as to not be influenced in my opinion or inadvertently copy stuff of others... But not the case here so I read it and totally agree with you.

The wait for LAST MAN STANDING is going to kill us.
