Story Overview:

The exciting debut of a new paranormal romance series
As a Miami narcotics detective, Leah Daniels never knows how her day will turn out. But she certainly never expected to be strapped to a stone altar, the human sacrifice in an ancient Mayan ritual meant to coax up a demon from the underworld. Or that she'd be saved by a handsome warrior-priest king who claims to recognize her from his visions...
Jaguar Strike wishes he hadn't made the mistake of reuniting his fellow warrior priests, or broken the law by saving their chosen human sacrifice. Now, he has no choice but to join forces with Leah and invoke dangerous magic in a death-defying race against the end of time.

My Review:
This review on this book may be a little bit different simply because I read book #6 in this series, StormKeepers, before any of the others (you can see that review HERE.) This book is the first in the Night Keepers series. Normally when you read a first book in a paranormal series, they tend to get bogged down in all the details of establishing the world. Reading this book, I could see where it might be this way. There are a lot of characters in this series and although this book is mainly focused on Leah & Strike, it is also establishing all of the other characters and their backstories. Normally, I HATE that time away from the main characters story line in first books, but that was NOT the case in this book. I was familiar with the characters and the world from reading book #6 first and that made it so that I really wanted to know everyone's back story. Quite honestly, I enjoyed that aspect of the book so much, I think that I would even recommend for you to read book #6 too...Hehe!

The NightKeepers are a powerful race thousands of years old (the generations, not these particular guys...they are all in their 20's and 30's) that are in charge of keeping the balance of power o earth. They each have an inner magic and each of them hold a special talent. Twenty four years ago the king made a bad choice trying to keep prophesy from coming true and almost the entire NightKeepers race was killed. Most that survived were the babies and toddlers and the king's 2 children who were all spirited away by the winikin (servants to the NightKeepers.) Since then they children have grown up knowing the legends of the NightKeepers that their winikins have told them, but not that the stories are actually real and about them.

That is until there is a shift in the magical world that creates the need for the NightKeepers to once again join and become active to prevent the end of the world Dec. 21, 2012.

Strike was the king's son. Unlike the other NightKeepers, he was old enough to understand and remember the slaughter of all of their parents. When the magical world shifts, it becomes his responsibility to bring all 13 of the remaining NightKeepers back into the fold. The challenges with that- this generation of NightKeepers have not been raised with the traditions and knowledge that they need. All of them are being asked to uproot and give up their lives for the greater good of man- seemingly a simple decision, but not so easy in reality.

To complicate matters is Leah. Somehow she is tied to the magical uprising, but appears to be simply human...not a good mate for the King of the NightKeepers even though they are definitely falling in love and had dreams about each other before they even met. Even worse, all the signs are saying that Leah will have to die or there will be no saving the world from destruction Dec. 21, 2012.

I loved Strike's character. He's a normal guy that up to this point has been running a nursery and now he's expected to be king. He's not so comfortable with that and all the responsibility that comes with that. His father made a horrible mistake and Strike is terrified that he will do the same. Leah, on the other hand, is a tough no-nonsense cop. She is in your face and totally straight-forward. I loved these two!!!

Really powerful stuff here and such an amazing book!!

I'm glad that reading the series out of order wasn't a bad thing. I've been handed books to read that were in the middle of a series, and... I hate it. I usually will not pick up any other books in that series.

YAY! I'm glad to see that you are able to start this series from the beginning so soon after reading book #6. :-) I'm happy that you really enjoyed book one and I can't wait to see what you say about books 2-5...then maybe rereading book 6 will make everything really fall into place. :-D
